Owen joins Newcastle United

£16million for Owen with a get-out clause after a first season. Isn't this what Owen wanted in the first place, a season long loan-deal at Newcastle?
WTF are them Geordies celebrating for? Owen's a mercenary, he has no loyalty. Idiots be weeping this time next year.

There is no get out clause.
Err ...

"I have heard a little rumour that Michael has a clause in his contract which states he can leave Newcastle United in one year's time," he said.

"I can tell you now that he hasn't. Of course Michael has clauses in his contract.

"In this day and age, all top players do - Alan Shearer does. But that is not one of them.
... which isn't quite the same thing ...

17 million pound for a player that has consistently failed to score 20 goals a season and the fans are celebrating?
as rocket says: world.gone.mad

17 million for a player that averages 1 goal every 2 games isnt bad at all!!
why are you so sceptical?

personally- why he signed for a manager who will be gone before xmas i dont have a clue...!

Funnily enough everyone says that about signings from other premiership clubs, but we're willing to give them a chance mainly because...

a) Diao was another player ruined by Houllier, constantly played out of position and never given a run in the side

b) We brought in Aliou Cisse last season, and Birmingham fans told us he was worthless rubbish. Cisse's gone on to be a bit of a fan favourite as he was given his chance

If you look at Diao in France, especially at Sedan, when he was given a decent run in the side he built his reputation that made Houllier shell out that 5 million for him. We needed a tackling midfielder, if for nothing else than to back Richard Hughes up until Cisse returns from injury. Diaos our boy, he'll get his chance and he won't be treated in the way that Liverpool fans I know have treated him 'Houllier signing, absolute rubbish'.

Houllier was the worst thing to happen to the club after you won all that tin, he bought good players and turned them into absolute crap.

Play up pompey! :)

Owne's petulant departure from Liverpool to Real Madrid and now his return to this country by way of Newcastle, puts me in mind of a similar move many years ago by a man with a perm called Kevin Keegan. ;)

I'd say 'why would he sign to play for a dick like Souness unless he knew he'd be gone soon?' would be a more realistic question.

Apparntly there is: £12m within the first 12 months ie the world cup provides a show case for a bid.

why would they agree to a get out clasue that is 5 million less then they spent for him???

i don't belive that.

such a well run club innit?

they're DESPERATE for something and maybe think Owen might be a stopgap success for them

but in the real world outside of SJP it does seem stupid

Did you see Freddy the Dick Shepherd say that signing Owen was his greatest achievement and moment in football? Nice one Freddy. Most chairmen rate their greatest achievements as winning things, not blowing £17m on a half-a-season mercenary who will be gone in 12 months.

Fucking idiot.

Owen's off to a good start at Newcastle. He's already joint top scorer. :D

Now that IS funny :)

The last time Newcastle were starting a new era they lost their next 4-5 games which included exits from the FA Cup, Uefa Cup, a few red cards and an on-pitch fight between two team-mates. I dread to think what could go wrong this time......

Owen breaks tib and fib in first 5 mins of England v N Ireland game and is out until February?

Lee Bowyer gets roasted by Dyer and Emre after a boozy night out?

Souness grows his curly hair and moustache back and stamps on Freddie Sheppard's leg, just below the knee?

Alan Shearer retires early and takes over from Big Mick as player-boss of Sunderland?

There was a good interview with Shepherd in the Times yesterday. He says he's going to retire as soon as the Toon win silverware.Roll on the cup then.He acknowledged that fans hate him (mostly Geordie women) and he really seems to want away from the limelight(especially with his high cost divorce on going). All those people that think theres a get out clause I believe are wrong.Shepherds a lot of things(most of em ryme with runt)but he is a good business man.He won't do a deal that leaves him out of pocket which is why i think this 12 mill get out clause is utter tosh. Why would he agree to take 4 mill less than he paid?Only incompetent chairmen would do such a stupid deal.I think this is probably why Owen eventually came to Newcastle. Why the hell would liverpool pay more to take him back than what they sold him for?If a plc board made a decision like that it's financial suicide.
