That's why Benitez spent 2 1/2 hours talking to Owen then?

Why would he have bothered?

He was just showing Owen round the trophy room.

"See, there's something new since you were last here.."

Liverpool wanted to sign Owen on loan for a year then buy him for £8m. Owen wanted to sign for liverpool. Newcastle wanted to sign Owen much more than Liverpool did - hence the ridiculous £17m price. Owen rang Parry yesterday morning to ask if Liverpool were likely to up their offer - knowing Madrid would not accept it. Parry advised Owen that the offer would not be increased so Owen 'reluctantly' signed for Newcastle to guarantee first team football NOW.

Ultimatley his choice was made for him. I'm sure that the get out clause (after a year for £12m) in his new contract can be construed as on a par with the on-loan for a year at Newcastle Owen was considering last week.

apparently moyes rang him at the last minute to see if there was any chance he would go there.

The Times said:
Then, just before I arrived home, David Moyes rang to see if there was a chance of getting me to Goodison Park and to wish me luck if not. I think he must have known that my Dad was briefly an Everton player and I used to follow them as a boy.

So the 2.5 hour meeting. Why was that? Or do you not have a clue what you are talking about.

You did just lose Jenas though.

Yeah and..... :D :D

Have you seen the lad play? One good season and he's been crap ever since.

He's only been playing because of the injuries. He's even behind Amdy Faye.

The lad doesn't want to be there, hasn't shown any value in 2 seasons and we can make a good £5m profit on him.

Fine by me

And oi Prophet, ran out of money in me dream team and appointed Perrin as boss, since I thought you'd be a surprise UEFA Cup package...any prospects?

They probably spoke to him because they wanted to sign him. As I've written already. Or can't you read properly?

Is this the right time to point out that there is NO GET OUT clause

And the money in the deal was obvious business play

- Newcastle make unmatched bid. Liverpool won't go that high. Owen will at least take a loan deal at SJP. He gets 15 goals, Newcastle happy.

- Perez says he'll never deal with Newcastle again after Woodgate. Newcastle offer Woodgates initial selling price over the actual valuation of Owen and Real start talking.

Fortunately we got rid of our rubbish players, sold one of them to Newcastle, Amdy something ;)

Perrins learning the english game, we've got up to 6 new players in our starting squad so it's a learning curve at the minute. Keep an eye on John Viafara, Collins Mbesuma, Gary O'Neil our new boy Vukic and should we sign him Franck Song'o (who's from Barca and is apparently brilliant)

Im confident this season.

Amdy Faye...oh yes he's one of the greatest midfielders ever to grace....Gateshead

There was talk of him going on loan to a Senegal league side, Darlington or Wolves

Hoping Cort keeps knocking them in, sell him for £10m and we take our huuuge sell on clause that Wolves agreed to because they're idiots

Ah well, it seems your club and mine are in the same boat. Relegation places so early, fans having a bitch....

You'll scrape UEFA, we'll be top of the bottom half

Yeah, Fair Play League.

We need a new defender. Team at the moment would be

Given
Carr
Babayaro (or anyone else...please god!)
Boumsong
Bramble (or Taylor if he's crocked)

Luque (Left mf)
Parker (Def mf)
Emre (behind front two)
Dyer/Solano (right midfield)

Shearer
Ameobi (or Owen :D )

Bench
Harper
Taylor
Bowyer
Faye/Solano
Ameobi

Did you see the Fat RedShite on the news crying last night.

I had to check twice that it wasn't a Geordie.

Then it cut to lots of Geordie's celebrating.

From a neutral outsider's POV

Sack Souness. He's the main problem at Newcastle, well him and the Board.

£17m is ridiculous for a player who'll almost certainly display conspicuous lack of match fitness for quite a few games, maybe even half the season.

Up to about £11m might have been somewhat more reasonable.

I'm wondering whether to put my head on the block and predict that Owen will score fewer than 12 goals this season ...

I think it's a shame owen has come back..
..I'd have liked to see him stay in Spain and seen him join a team who would be built around him, someone like Deportivo or Villareal who would be a challenge for Owen to take onto the next level in the same way Maradona did for Napoli, Gazza did briefly for Spurs
whether he could or not would have been very interesting
Doubt madrid would have sold him to a rival especially after getting a bid of £17m though
but English players and abroad just don't seem to go which is a shame imo..It improved Ince no end by playing in Italy..from an England perspective seeing players abroad would definitely benefit our team, they learn a different culture, different style of football, gain confidence(ok maybe not Des Walker but he was played left back by Sampdoria)
Owen'll score loads I reckon, people who knock him have very short memories
but if I was a Toon fan I can't say I'd welcome a player that much who only wanted to come on loan

The worlds gone mad

15,000 fans start chanting for Souness, a week after they started chanting his name at Bolton

This wasn't about saving Souness his job (which it has) but about Shepherd

Did you hear the crowd chanting for Nobby Solano, and the fat git had the most smug of looks, he's pulled himself out of the shit again

No think his best is 18...maybe 19...

17 million pound for a player that has consistently failed to score 20 goals a season and the fans are celebrating?

as rocket says: world.gone.mad

If Didier Drogba is worth £24m then its a good value deal, and I've already posted my Woodgate related deal thoughts on this thread.

And ffs, we faced the prospect of Shola Ameobi, up front...all season...he hasn't even scored 17 Premiership goals in 3 seasons!

Gonna duplicate the post but nevermind

Theres an awful lot of miserable bitter fuckwits on here today. If your not bothered about us then fuck off the thread then.

Fact is, we needed a striker, we got one, he happens to Michael Owen, who is a great striker but was behind Ronaldo and Raul and Robinho in pecking order, its not like he was struggling to get in ahead of Cisse and Crouch.

So what if 15,000 kids turn up and give him a welcome. Whats wrong with that. we've had nowt to cheer about for 10 goal-less hours at home. Had 2 dull seasons and haven't won anything in ages. If he'd have went back to Liverpool no doubt there'd be likewise amassed second coming scenes....its the school holidays you know

he's not.

chelsea have the money tho.

hope this helps

We've got the money. We spent nothing last season, Nicky Butt, thats all we spent and this close summer we've spent (if solano comes) close to the £30m mark

We normally fork out £15m per close season, saved up from last season.

Most of the cash has come from Sage and Adidas anyway
