Owen joins Newcastle United

£17m...

I say that's about £9m over the odds...

Prior to you getting peanuts for him, that's a lot less than you were claiming he was worth. Wasn't it more like £40M if Rooney is worth £20M?

But if you think he's worth only a million more than Peter Crouch... :D:D

I think this is a dreadful move for Owen, but I'm sure Newcastle will be very happy!

Anybody else think Newcastle more or less wanted to pay as much as possible, to make a point about how they are a 'big club?'

That thought did occur to me, yes. They'd pay £8m for a deckchair!

Anyone got any idea how much they'll be paying Owen per week?

RedShites are going MENTAL on their message boards. Some of them are saying 'never wanted him anyway'.

None of them are being drawn on whether Peter Crouch is better though.

It's a shame a great player is going to waste his best years at a shit club, and throw away his place in the England squad. But it's his fault. He walked out on Liverpool, missed one of the crowning moments in our history, and hoped he could walk back in like nothings happened. We don't owe him any favours. Newcastle now have a player who considers them a last resort to get back into premiership football.

Couldn't have put it better myself. Owen clearly is getting the club he deserves.

The LFC message boards have always only been about 60-40 in favour of Owen coming back. Those in favour saw him as an answer to the team's lack of out-and-out goalscorer. Those who were against see Benitez's tactics as as being more important than an ex-hero's goals.

I think LFC’s offer was low and loan-based for the first year. Madrid said ‘no chance' and told Owen that he would have to go to the Toon or stay in Spain. I bet if he could turn back time Owen would sign that big new contract he was offered at Anfield last summer.

only time will tell, when owen plays a few games then we can have our say. What about a poll, or a owen watch, rating him out of 10 for each game. BTW I am not a newcastle fan or owen fan. Just interesting to see what happens. :D

ok - I'll do a poll.

There are a couple of other pieces of info coming up now:

1. There is a '£12m buy out after one season' clause in Owen's Newcastle contract.

2. Liverpool are due a 25% sell on fee so make £4m on the sale to Newcastle.

Not sure if either of these are true but I wouldn't be surprised to see Owen playing for Liverpool again before he's too much older.

Latest Press Conference Details:

Q: so Michael, why have you joined Newcastle?

MO; well, I didn't see much of them last season, but my agent tells me that they're a real team of fighters. Bowyer, Dyer, last season Bellamy and robert, even Souness.

Q: are you disappointed not to be playing in europe this season?

MO: Not at all. I hate Europe. I was in Europe all last season and I didn't play so I'm used to it now.

Q: Is it true that you thought Newcastle were second in the table until your Agent turned the newspaper the right way up?

MO: yes - but Mr Shepherd has told me things will improve.

Q; Are you looking forward to getting into the area and taking your opportunities?

MO: Certainly, I've heard that houses are a lot cheaper up here. I should be able to afford two houses a week.

Q: finally Michael, what did Alan Shearer promise you if you signed?

MO: He said he'd let me be Co-presenter of Match of the Day in two season's time.

Oooooh....scratch out yer eyes. Time will tell as to whether Owens move is a good one. I'm glad! I was thinking they might move for Nugent at PNE!!!

If the clause bit is correct it's a smart bit of business IMO - the £12m only gives another teamt he right to talk to him, so NUFC could demand more if he starts scoring loads of goals.

Big 'if' though.

From an England persepctive it's good to have him playing every week.

I can't help but feel at least a little sympathy for Owen.

Having seen the kind of success that Beckham has enjoyed on and off the pitch you can't blame him for leaving a club that had faltered under Houllier to go join Real. No-one could have predicted the success Liverpool had under Benitez (in Europe at least) last season.

Now after a year away whereby he had a great goals to minutes on pitch ratio but wasn't given much of a chance (despite Raul being past his best from what I've seen on the telebox and read in the Spanish press) he's had to salvage his career by joining an underperforming team with dubious management and board.

17mil is way too much - he scores a lot of goals but I'm glad we didn't pay that for him.

I had heard rumours that it was all signed, sealed and delivered that he was back at LFC and we could have done with him, our strikers are a bit iffy, but not at 17mil...

the high price, apparently, is because of the outstanding money owed to newcastle in the woodgate transfer. not sure how much exactly but around £7mil - so effectively newcastle have just written off any more payments from madrid for woodgate.

wonder how owen's team mates will welcome him knowing that he doesnt really want to be there...

WTF is going on

C+P from the beeb..

bitter liverppol supporting journalist.

i'm still very surprised that it has happened.

Yeah, still when they sack Souness, on current form, pretty much a certainty he might become part of a reasonable team and score a few.

I rate him highly and think that he is one of Europes greatest *proven* out and out strikers. 17Million, hoho, got to hand it to Real. Sell for 9Million profit and only have to pay him for 1 year. He must feel like such a p(r)awn!

Sounds like Owen just doesn't want to live on Merseyside...

Yeah, cos Newcastle's a much better option...

And I imagine Owen would have gone back to live in his multi-million pound mansion in North Wales, or got somewhere in a leafy part of Cheshire.

wow!!!

didn't believe it at first, thought it was a wind up!

fair play to newcastle, now all they have to do is get a new manager and they'll be half way back to being a champions league team again (like they were under sir bobby)

£17m for a lad who will spend half the season in the physio's room, and who is only there because his top three choices didn't want him! I bet Newcastle fans are feeling like the fat kid who gets picked last for games...

His contract has also got more clauses in it than Lapland - expect him to be off if Souness gets sacked, they don't get into Europe or anyone better than Newcastle come in for him. Like Boro, or Bolton.

only just sinking in.
don't care that we weren't his first choice, he's here, he's a pro, he'll score goals.
get Solano as well and we're laughing. Hopefully.
