Overrated food

French food hasn't 'fallen out of fashion' and it never will. It's the cullinary equivalent of a well-cut LBD. Classic.

I'd forgotten about gnocchi, fuck they're nasty.

Langoustines too, a complete waste of time.

Thirded.Gnocchi is gross..although i'll be having all of your future uneaten langustines :)

I think parma/serano ham is a little overrated.Maybe just not to my taste, but I don't get the big deal about it.

And vegan's SEITAN is fucking gross..I had a mate who would harp on about munching this stuff constantly..it's like it doesn't even VAGUELY have the consistancy/taste of steak so why bother? Just have a nice chateaubriand and you'll be alright

what an odd assertion.

what do you base that idea on, other than the daft 'freedom fries' inanity?

the fact that 30 or 40 years ago there was a french restaurant on every corner and now you would be hard-pressed to find just one...at least here in the US

Load of cack innit? French cuisine's still the base of most restaurant cuisine in much of the world, even if the old heavier classics have fallen out of favour a little.

so then why are there 10 million curry houses in the UK? over here its american food, italian, sushi, chinese, thai, pizza, etc...the last time i had a decent coq au vin was in chicago in 1997 :D

apparently french food has a lot more competition these days

Here's a tip; it doesn't need to have Frenchie McFrench branding on a restaurant for it to serve French food. Nearly every restaurant that isn't 'ethnic' themed in some way will have strong french influences. That's pretty much any bistro, upmarket or mediterranean restaurant, even down to the sauces in your steak houses and the mayonnaise on US-style burgers, the little pastries from coffee houses.

I've no particular love of the French, but to deny that their cuisine is still a massive part of most Western cooking is plain daft.

jaffa cakes are sickly.

battenburg cake is just plain wrong.

Marzipan, tarzipan, man, that stuff is hanging.

hot cross buns.

In fact most regional bread type foods are over-rated by those brought up with them.

i would agree the influence is definitely there but the proper french restaurants are basically gone.

European steak, yeh. East coast steak, yeh.

The further you get away where the cows are raised the more steak sucks and the less they know how to cook it. If you live in a place where they knock it over the head and slide it onto your plate then you can't beat it.
We do raise cows in Europe too.

Anyway, I can't really think of anything overrated - there's stuff I don't like and avoid. And there's stuff that's not cooked well by some people. And there's stuff that's not particularly inspiring - like tomatoes - I never get that excited about tomatoes, or squash or cucumber

He must be going to the wrong places - if he's gone to the Aberdeen Steak Houses that are all over British cities, I wouldn't blame him for making that assessment - they only seem to attract US tourists for some reason!

In the last couple of months he's been in Italy, Spain, and Britain.

I wouldn't really eat a dirty great steak in Italy or Spain either, its not really their cuisine. I would eat one in Ireland and the UK though - British and Irish beef is great.

And French cuisine, is obviously the daddy.

My ex (for one) travels in Europe for business a lot and he avoids steak in Europe with a passion.

He's obviously not used to the finer cooked stuff we serve over here, but that thick fatty tasteless stuff that passes for steak in places like Texas. Without doubt the worst steaks of my life have all been in the USA, texas in particular. Big does not mean good!

Bizzarly the best steaks I've had have been in Belgium - A place that many knock for their bland food.

Can't comment on steak in Texas. He was quite pleased to be back in Nebraska for a good steak a couple weeks ago. If you're ever in Omaha try Gorat's. It's the same place Warren Buffet goes for steak.
