Overpaid, underworked bosses are a necessity....

Just where I live here, everybody drives to work. I know it might be different in London but where we live people use their cars.

But had a breakdown .Not very successful in my eyes. Sorry to be harsh but there you are.

Why? Turnover of over a million and for that particular industry is very good. Business still going strong. The fact that the company didn't go tits up when she had her breakdown, shows her good business sense to have hired a strong team that could cope if the boss was there or not.

life effects people in all sorts of way - having a breakdown can happen to anyone.... Your opinions seems rather naive.

I never come across that in my circle. May be they hide it well but i doubt it.

Kitten catchers  I have a cute little VW Beetle. Some people I know have those big SUV things... but what about it?
if you can use public transport for your commute, it's clearly much better for the environment.

the kitten catcher thing is a jibe that anyone who uses more fuel than they need to, is a bit of a git, and might enjoy harming kittens too.

Whilst I agree with the sentiment, I think you're being a bit simplistic.

What if you have to sacrifice a little bit of some of the above in order to have any hope of ever being able to buy a house, or save for a decent retirement?

worth it, if the only reward is : more money than you actually need to get by.

if you are rewarded by a better quality of life / more happiness, then it's worth it.

You'd be surprised how many people have had breakdowns. A lot of people don't mention it because they know some people will think they are weak and penalise them for it. It's when you talk about personal experience of breakdowns, that people usually open up.

agreed but what is succesfull?

I am trained in an occupation that could in reality pay me 140k per year, I decided to use my skills as a coded welder, doing contract work that gives me 5 mnths off a year, reason being I couldn't be bothered having to deal with the people within my scope, career, career was all they seemed to be concerned about.

I am the most succesfull person I know, yet I took a pay cut to do that.

Well we have very different views of success then. To me the monetary rewards is the success. I mean the job satisfies but so is the lure of that fat wad.

I still get a fat wad mate, just don't have to pretend to be something I never wanted to be.

I also have 4/5 months off a year to do exactly what I want.

I also never have to spend time with people that delight in oneupmanship and backstabbing.

I also don't have to spend time with people that are absolutely useless at their job, only being there because they decided to spend their lives excelling in the previous statement that I mentioned.

They are not supposed to be a motivation for him, they are supposed to be a motivation for you and me and all the other workers who are struggling to get to the top of the heap.

In fact, the more egregious his salary the more hard work it should squeeze out of everyone else who wants it.

Lazear and his fellow economists call this "tournament theory".

I can see where he is coming from but i think he has made a complete balls up in assuming that this has come about by design & doesn't simply exist as a result of basic human greed

IMO fat cat salaries are not 'designed' to exist to encourage workers - they simply exist because the people at the top are fairly greedy, have an enormous sense of self importance & are in a position to give themselves huge slalarys.

however I do agree that the existance of fat cat salaries does encourage people to scramble over each other trying to work thier way to the top...

i.e. you get a workforce that is happy to work overtime for no extra pay because they have 'prospects' & want to impress the bosses above them so they can move upwards - unfortunately most of them never will.

I only ever intend to work within small companies/organisations & I don't like to sacrifice too much of my free time for work - I don't understand all these people joining the rat race & trying to be the next overpaid fat cat/top civil servant/whatever - the vast majority of them won't make it & the ones who do probably won't be breaking much of a sweat on the way up anyway.
