Overnight trains

I tend to find the cheap tickets are very hard to come by in July and August, unfortunately, even midweek. The tourist season in the Highlands is quite short and intense, centred around the end of July.

Well they had some when I called towards the end of last week - hence the current promotion. :)

Whatever you do, dont try the Bucharesti-Chisinau sleeper - yopu will not sleep - its about a 2 hour journey stretched into 12 due to the bogey changing at the Moldiovan border:(

Pyongyang to Beiijing is OK and is a chance to see some of the DPRK that you dont usually get access to.Food is rubbish tho.

St petersburg-tallinn is another favorite of mine

:D They did this coming in to Russia from China too... it took the entire day and a large number of us had cameras confiscated for taking photos... Same thing happened on the way back out of Russia - can't remember where exactly though.... it was fascinating to watch mind... (I did actually manage to keep my camera and got a few pictures to boot).

now that must be brilliant - it must be fascinating going to N. Korea. Food wise - being veggie I suffered terribly on the trans-sib, I couldn't eat anything in the buffet car - not that anyone seriously ate there anyway - we all ate from the babushkas who would invade the platform from Siberian farms everytime the train stopped. For the others it was ok - for me it was piroshki Russian roulette - oh and I ate a lot of potatoes!! :D

Probably not too expensive.

Me and memespring did Florence to Milan, Milan to Nice, Nice to Bordeaux (overnight) and Bordeaux to Bilbao last year and it was less than £100 each. I think the overnight Nice to Bordeaux fare was the most expensive and that was £30 each!

 Might drive it depends what works out cheaper, trains are wicked fun though!!

It's all good then!

Is this a different promotion to the regular "bargain berths" thing then?

A friend was asking me for advice the other day and we were checking out the website but there didn't seem to be anything going for the next month or so.

Wow - only just seen this - I am VERY envious!!

And also slightly depressed... :(

Nonetheless you have done the London-Cornwall one and I haven't. A glaring omission from my list. I'll have to try and sort that out some time soon.

Poland/Belarus border ( Warsaw-Moscow route) does this in the middle of the night - the different guages were specified in ordet to restrict any possible invaders use of the Russian railway lines IIRC ( although someone will come on here and debunk this im sure )

I live for Overnight railway journeys - I want to do Riga-Odessa soon - its about 60 hours - but cheap:D

Will be doing Baku-Tbilisi in October

Not much food in the DPRK anyway - the Ubiquitous Chinese noodle bowls + hot water were about all we had until we crossed the river to Dandong and the DPRK carriages were attached to Chinese Buffet car!

No I heard the same reason for the different guages. And yes it was in the middle of the night (whilst china/Russia was daytime) I had Belarus borders in my head (mostly 'cos they made me get a £50 visa simply to pass through overnight on a train.. )- but it was a while ago now and my memory is not what it used to be... :D

I think so - I'm on their mailing list and they mailed me specifically with that line, half price fares - but I've deleted the mail now....

The Belarus Lot are bad for the visas- it a valuable source of income for them - I recently did a bus from Kaunas ( lithuania ) through to Minsk to catch the Minsk-Moscow sleeper and my Russian visa seemed to act as a transit visa for belarus - I think they know that they can get hard cash form train travellers and dont bother with bus passengers ( it VERY cheap on the bus also ! )

There are2 routes from Warsaw to Vilnious( lith ) the most frequent just nips into Belarus for about 10 minutes and they all get hit for transit visas - the other route is only an overnight train ( another one :D ) and misses Belarus entirely.Vilnius station will now not sell a warsaw via belarus ticket to anyone who does not have a Visa - even bribes dont work!
