Overnight Oats

Right, had my very first overnight oats this morning, very nice indeed! Summer porridge

I made this one (with Skyr and oat milk) and topped it with blueberries:

and whilst I wouldn't normally eat choccy for brekky, this was absolutely fucking gorgeous, so, overnight oats devotees, give me your fave recipes here (WITH PROPORTION/MEASUREMENTS), so I can start making more.
What kind of oatx do you use: quick or regular?

Made some last night and had them this morning (oats, milk, yogurt, chia seeds, raisins, honey).

Overall a bit meh but decent enough. They felt a bit insubstantial and I missed the crunch of granola!

They are cheaper and probably healthier than ready-made breakfast cereal so will try them again, maybe doing them slightly differently e.g. with cocoa powder).

Granola's a different thing altogether though innit?

And OO are without doubt healthier than ready-made cereal. Minimal processing innit?

I'm gonna make 2 different kinds tonight, see how they come out. One will have dried mixed fruit and cinnamon in and walnuts, cos I wanna see how the dried fruit comes out. The other will have frozen fruit plus maple syrup, and mostly Skyr rather than oat milk.

Will probably put some golden linseeds into each.

You could put some nuts and seeds in. I always put fruit too.

Or you could make your own granola. But then you become even more aware of how unhealthy it is really as you're pouring oil and syrup all over it.

I make my own granola. I don't think it's that unhealthy tbh - I use this recipe, with rapeseed oil, and although yes it does have oil and syrup in, it's proportionally not too bad. We do need fat in our diet after all. Plus way fewer preservatives in the homemade, which is always good. You know exactly how much sugar there is in it, so you can adjust it if you fancy.

Making your own cakes, on the other hand, DEFINITELY shows you why you get fat eating cake! :D

I agree, love granola. Here's a wholefood version that I've been making for years, nut butter instead of oil and dates instead of syrup. I up the nuts until they're like 40% of the granola, which is highly calorific but healthy & delicious.

As to overnight oats, I've decided to give them a go, the photos/descriptions on this thread have twisted my arm :D I found this version which sounds absolutely lush, if a little faffy. Will have to make enough for a few days to make it worth the effort.

Just prepared some for tomorrow. Better be good. It’s with milk, coconut, spiced sugar and walnuts.
This was ok, would eat again - not very organised so probs not very often. Not convinced by the supposed health properties, but probs more cos oats and nuts and milk n that are already pretty healthy without having to soak them first, but can see the appeal of them texturally as they’re not as gloopy as porridge and certainly better than if you ate them as soon as you added the milk.

Yeh, I put tons of nuts in mine too

Blimey, that IS faffy as fuck! :D Yeh, I made 3 days worth with my first attempt, and glad I did. I could eat it every day tbh, but gonna try some different versions now. I was always a bit gutted about having to give up porridge in the summer months. Much as I love it, I am a VERY sweaty person, add in menopause and anything remotely warm to eat will have me sweating my work make-up off! I'm made up the OO worked so well, cos now I can just have summer porridge.

Good luck, and report back!

Wow, well, glad you had a go of it! Did you not think the consistency was lovely and creamy? I'm putting walnuts with one of mine, but have decided to only add them the morning after rather than let them soak overnight.

What's in the spiced sugar/what flavours? Sounds intriguing.

What do you mean the 'supposed' health properties? For myself, I am eating them because it's too hot in the summer for me to eat porridge. Plus I get to load it with Skyr for the extra protein, for muscle building purposes.

A quick question. Anyone know roughly how much 1 tablespoon of oats equates to in grams?
I just looked at a recipe and it helpfully mixed tbsp, tsp and grams for the ingredietns.

May actually buy some scales but not yet...

Tried again this morning after a long break - oats, raspberry flavoured protein powder, chia seeds, soy milk, berries and seeds topping. It is so much nicer than porridge, I love the texture. But the coldness of it straight out of the fridge I find a bit of a shock first thing in the morning. Perhaps 30 seconds in the microwave would take the edge off.

One google result confidently says 9.74 grams, and another equally confidently states 5.62. So somewhere between the two I guess.

I wouldn't get too hung up on amounts for each ingredient. Unless you're keeping a stringent calorie count you'll know yourself what you want more or less of something. And even if you've made a batch easy to add in a bit more milk or nuts or whatever you fancy for the next day.

Take it out half hour before eating maybe?

I've done that before. Do it with cereal too. Takes the edge off.

That's why I always eat it along with a mug of coffee or tea 😀

I have just put half a mug, with half a large pot of yoghurt, some blueberries and protein powder. also a bit of water. Blended up and left in the fridge. I know people usually have milk so this will be quite thick.

Thanks. I’m just being a protein counter. well to start with anyway.

These oats are really old as well. From my last attempt at eating porridge. they’ve been stored in a airtight box and are dry though. I presume they can’t kill you…

No more creamy than with other methods. Might put some cream in it next time though!

Can’t quite remember what I put in the sugar, I made some Christmas popcorn with it. Definitely cinnamon and vanilla pods, maybe nutmeg and cloves too?

The health properties referred to upthread - they’re supposedly healthier if you soak them cos they release more iron or something. Which is fine if you’re in need of it, but not so much of a big deal if you’re healthy and already eating a balanced diet.

Overnight oats has been my summer breakfast for a few years. I make various ways but my easiest one is cup of rolled oats, cup of oat milk, 5 big tablespoons of soya yoghurt (using vanilla at the moment), sprinkle of chia seeds & as many frozen blueberries as I want. I sometimes add agave syrup. Then I mix all together, pop in fridge & eat next day. I use cups as I have a cute set of measuring cups in the shape of swans.

You can make a bigger weekly portion so you are just making once or just do the oats/milk/yoghurt overnight & then add fruit /nuts etc when you eat.

This was lovely - I used 100g Skyr and only a splash of oat milk, and it came out incredibly creamy! Didn't need any extra sweetener, no syrup or owt, the dried fruit swelled and provided enough sweetness even for my sweet tooth. I put some chopped pecans on top this morning.

Incredibly filling!
