Out of date mince - will I die

Minnie_the_Minx

someinenhhanding menbag and me ah bollox
bought some mince from M&S on Friday and it's sitting in the fridge.

It's use by date is 6 SEPTEMBER

However, the meat is still pink so I'm guessing it's a misprint

 Fri was the 14th wasn't it? why did the store sell you ground beef with a use by date of the 6th?

I really wouldn't eat it if I were you. Even if it's wrong it's probably better not to take the chance.

Properly refrgerated mince, still wrapped would probably still be ok a few days after its sell-by date but 10 days or so is pushing it. Cuts of meat would probably have the longest life but not mince.

M&S are usually pretty rigourous about dates IME. I'd take it back.

Brixton M&S are always selling out of date stuff - you have to be pretty vigilant
if she has her sales receipt she should take it back and have a chat with the manager.

I would never eat meat which was past its sellby date (actually, I would never eat meat, but that's a different story!), and I would most definitely take it back if they sold it to you after the sellby date.

I would not advise anyone to risk it, either...

I'm wondering if it was just dated wrong (ie. 6th instead of 16th).
call the store and find out....maybe they mis-labeled a whole lot of packages. just to be safe if you are intent on eating it make sure to cook it for a long time on high heat. :)

Make sure to post a running blog as you die, to warn those of us in times futurrrr :)

e2a: this isn't JUST e-coli. This is specially selected, prime, hand-reared, lovingly prepared and tenderly nuzzled e-coli.

Wouldn't it have gone brown by now?

Complain, you'll probaby get a voucher.

even if the mince is rotten, as long as you cook it properly (as in thorough), it'll still be edible.

Don't bank on that at all - Depending on the type of any contamination, there can often be secondary toxins produced that are quite unaffected by cooking. Particularly from strains of e-coli, which are the most common contaminants in red meat & veg.

You can read here about my experience with secondary toxins:

I've got a dodgy tummy, I feel faint, I think I'm going to fall over

Lucky I haven't cooked the mince innit! :D

It's the ironing that's making me feel all hot and giddy and the fact that I've not eaten since I got up at 9.30am that's making my tummy funny :o

I normally check dates on everything but I probably just saw 6 and assumed it was 16th

Now we're going to have to go shopping

It's illegal to sell stuff that's past it's use by date, so I would definitely go in and complain.

Now 99.9% of the time I keep receipts but what with tidying up all day, it looks like b/f has chucked it :D

Tesco on the OKR can be a bit dodgy, especially the meat and 'fresh' soup cold cabinets.
Oh, yeah, well. I used to work for tesco's. I'm not in the least surprised.

Particularly after - on one occasion - pointing out that a large trolley / wheelie container of bags of prawns and shellfish had been left out of t'freezer for well over four hours (they were noticeably smooshy inside), and being told 'SHHHHHH' by the produce manager type person :)

They went on sale a couple of days later (after resolidifying)

I don't buy much that could even potentially make me horribly ill from supermarkets :D

Well. I do. All the time. Just not from that Tesco's.

Ignamarorance is bliss, innit :)

Minnie the mince is probably ok.

It changes colour when it goes off.

:D at Mrs Quoad.

 I've had in date, off colour mince before and eaten it and been OK.

Mind you I do have a cast iron stomach.

I'm not going to chance it. I'm too busy to go down with a dodgy stomach a week before my hols :D

You can have it if you like? ;)

Friday? Sounds like the date should be 16th. If it's the 6th it will smell a little when you open it.

And it would be brown / grey in colour.

If it's pink, just hoy it in the pan.

Except that it was almost certainly from rice. Although it was E-coli, not Bacillus Cerus which is most commonly attributed to rice.
