Well done. You remember cat good.
Right, I've just got in and found a pack of BBQ Chicken drumsticks in the fridge with a use by date of 29th September, so they're 2 days out.
If you were me, would you cook them (thoroughly) and eat them tonight?
Poll to follow...

they do say if it looks alright, and it smells alright then its OK (though maybe not stuff like mussels) - that said, I would really think twice cos I'm paranoid.

Is it worth the risk a few days of puking your guts up for the sake of a couple of quids worth of chicken?

They were 75p, reduced from £3 (because they were at their sell by date).
I should also add that no children or elderly folk will be dining with me this evening.

ETA I just checked and they smell alright.

if you're happy that the smell of BBQ seasoning isn't drowning out that distinctive 'off' smell that chicken has, then go for it - you sound fairly committed to eating them already :D just really, really cook em through I guess.

cut them open to the bone and give them a good sniff.

i think use by dates stop people using their brains and their senses. I threw a carton of soup away at work today cos it had gone all puffed up, despite the fact that it had a couple of days to go before the use by. My colleague was horrified - he thought it was guaranteed to be alright. I was thinking "noooo... it's clearly fermenting or something"...

OTH - a ridiculous amount of food gets wasted in this country because its reached it's 'use-by' date & people have forgotten how to us their common sense.

If you'd (OP) bought the chicken from a butcher, in a plain plastic bag, & stored it sensibly in your fridge - would you feel safe eating it today?

I have to admit I am a bit of a wuss about out-of-date meat - though tbf I wouldn't even consider "2 days past" to be "out of date"
- because I'm not really sure what "a bit off" meat smells like
.

Sod this, they're in the bin :D I just found some chops that are ok till tomorrow.
Cheers for the replies though :)

Generally, I ignore use by dates and just go by whether they look/smell alright, but I am a bit fussy about chicken.

You had a narrow escape there! You would have been dead just in time to appear on the Ten O'clock News tonight. The story was already being written up for the morning papers as well by journalists who trawl Urban for news. Now they will have to find a new story. ;) probably

Sell by dates on meat in supermarkets are only about three days from sale date anyway so two days over is quite a lot. Also I read somewhere about supermarket staff being made to re-date stuff that is close to expiry so that they can keep up their profit margins. This makes the whole thing very iffy.

I buy my meat from a butcher so there are no sell-by dates. I have to use my judgment. I allow 3 days and make sure that any poultry is eaten first, then pork and finally lamb or beef. I might let sausages go another day because they have preservative in them. So far nothing bad has happppppppppppppppppppppppppppp

E2A I mean 'use by' dates above not 'sell by' but won't edit it because that would be cheating or something.

I'd eat it, supermarket stuff dates are always prudent....if it smells alright cook it up and see what happens....I'm of the theory that if you cook something long and hot enough cool any bacteria will be done for....there is no scientific basis for this mind just my theory....good luck

Was it use by, sell by or best before (the only phrase i think you didn't use).

If it was Sell by - I would have eaten em.
Best before - i would have eaten em.
Use by - its in the bin faster than you can say salmonella.

I don't think they ever use the vague 'Best before' with stuff like fresh meat. That's for cans and dry food and stuff innit.

My housemate seems quite glad he didn't get served dodgy chicken anyway :D

Me, I have a stomach like a shark,I even use chicken that is slightly whiffy (obviously I don't make a habit of it) I curry it-vindaloo,that kills anythin....I have never been ill...

Exactly. I've posted about this at least twice before but I'll do it again just to drum the message home.

From the last thread about this:

"Use by, sell by and best before dates all have different purposes.

http://www.eatwell.gov.uk/asksam/foo...abellingrules/

According to the link, it's fine to eat something that's past it's sell by date, or best before date, but you should never eat food which is past it's use by date."

Depends - fresh chicken, prob ok. Pre-cooked/cook chill chicken, no way. Then againm I've had bad Salmonella, to the edge of kidney failure before & e-coli, which I've posted about in detail just recently, again.

Both were rather unpleasant experiences to say the least!

Go on fish it out of the bin ya wuss ;) I rarely eat anything in date but then I don't buy anything already in a sauce so I can use my nose. That said I drank tap water for six months in India and was fine.
