TBH, I like the bit at the back the most
I was pretty amused when I read you being quoted there fridge.
There are definitely some good bits in NS. The histories section is almost always interesting for instance and is unique in publications like this as far as I can tell. the news bits you could find on many websites though at the same level, and there is definitely a bias towards loony astrophysics. I should say that I'm heavily biassed against big physics though, partly because I look at what it costs and see what could be achieved in biology for the same money, partly because the applications are so vague. The other thing is from what I can tell if you really want to talk about that stuff if it doesnt have pages of maths you may as well be pissing into the wind.
I still buy NS though, partly for the jobs, partly cos of the daft stuff at the back.
Nature gives better news coverage and although the papers themselves are hard going unless you are a professional scientist in that field, each one has a summary in the news and views section that gives the bare bones. it is 5 times the price though, which is bad. as I said I think scientific american strikes the right balance.
