Nah, it goes deeper than that - my own experiences are of anyone who expressed a desire to self-improve was cast-out as being 'above themselves', the implicit insult being 'thinking you're better than me'. That those IME most guilty of espousing said view were also the ones most imbued with the 'keep up with the Joneses' mentality and DM-type snobbery is beside the point...
