  1. 1927

1927 Funnier than he thinks he is.

I admire him, but shouldnt he decide whether he wants to compete with able bodied or paralympians? he cant have it both ways imho!

  2. Geri

    Geri wasn't born to follow

    Why not?

Its great that he's in both, the Paralympics shouldnt be seen as a lesser event that one can 'graduate' from.

I only just realised he will be competing in both. Doesn't sit comfortably with me, but I can't honestly give a decent reason why.

I don't really get Denise Lewis's argument that "he's such a lovely guy and we all love him" so it's alright. Does that mean if he wasn't a very nice guy then he shouldn't be allowed to run? Do we base the decision on how nice their personality is?

I think superficially it seems a bit cheeky, like having two bites of the... um, apple, or cherry. Some kind of fruit.

For me the bigger question will remain whether his prosthetics actually give him an advantage. Really haven't followed the debate closely, but heard the point made somewhere that he suffers less from lactic acid build-up, though how much that compensates for not having two full legs is a question for someone far more qualified than me.

That really irritated me too; I figured she was going to qualify it with something a bit more considered, but had to go check on the rice so didn't hear her follow up

Can anybody in the paralympics compete in the olympics if they make the standard? Is there nobody else?

That argument works both ways. If the poaralympics is equal to the Olympics then why does he want to play with the able bodied athletes. Anyway its a mute point really as after that performance i see little point in him trying it again!

She went on to make another nonsensical argument - that it's alright as long as he doesn't get into the final but if he started getting into finals then there may be a debate.

Not sure we need to wait until it actually happens to know that someone using prosthetics may get into a final

Mixed feelings on it. Part of me feels that if he's good enough for the able-bodied event then it's somehow not fair competing in the paralympics, but then part of me thinks that's a really patronising attitide.

    So I dunno. HTH.

He's that fast he really has no competition in the Paralympics, that's the problem. Its unfortunate for him he's too good for one games and not good enough for the other:(

Technology never stops, so the day will dawn when the technological advancements in prosthetics become so good that there will be some pretty speedy kids who have the grave misfortune to be born in peculiar countries who would be at high risk of having their legs chopped off, just so as they could have the extra zip provided by the prosthetics.

Blimey. That was a long sentence.

  17. marty21

marty21 One on one? You're crazy.

there was a swimmer last Olympics who swam in both games, and I think there's a table tennis player in both this year, plus one of the shooters was legally blind in this year's event.

Why is that? Does he just have a very good skillset, or is it the tech that makes him good so, in theory, other might catch up with him (so to speak...) in time?

Good enough but not medal contending good enough is what I mean - sorry! In the Paralympics he's a dead cert.

that performance in an olympic semi-final? he'll make a decent relay run as well

Its not the tech - those Ossur Cheetah (brand name not as in spotty animal) feet he runs on are the best of the best but they are available to anyone (who can afford them). Its his technique I think, along with an innate ability.

  25. smmudge

smmudge It's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it

IMO yes he should be allowed to compete in both. If people are worried that prosthetics gives athletes an unfair advantage then they can go away and look at making prosthetics that matches able bodies rather than surpassing them, and until then we'll just carry on as we are.

  26. Corax

    Corax Luke 5:16

But neither is Martin Rooney. Should he not bother? Pistorius made the semis, he was faster than a lot of other athletes. Same could be said for 100m - should they all cut the crap and just go straight to a head-to-head between Gay & Bolt?

The essence of competition isn't only about winning.

I was wondering about that - whether there are many (or any) other athletes that compete with similar prosthetics?

To be a good runner you need to have good recruitment of your hamstrings and glutes, which he has, and a cadence of about 180bpm. Somehow he manages to get that amount of strides in which is amazing - I've never seen another amputee manage that.

    He's pretty damn awesome:cool:
