Original Ovaltine

Popped out for supplies and ended up talking to Liz-across-the-road for 45 minutes, of cabbages and kings

She was wistful and mischievous and mentioned she finds it hard to get decent Ovaltine from local shops. The stuff they sell is too fine a powder apparently and has milk already in it, and she longs for the course stuff from days of yore.

I've only a passing knowledge of bedtime beverages so am asking for more expert opinions - where do I get original Ovaltine or as close to it as possible? I'd love to pop her a jar round.

Look for "Ovaltine Original Add Milk" rather than one that says "Ovaltine Light Add Water" or whatever.

No, they have reformulated it many times over the years, and it also has different formulations in different countries.

It's all fine these days afaik. Define "used to be", it's been around since 1865 e.g. I suspect this...

Steel Icarus I’ve just thought, if you write a nice paper letter to their consumer services dept saying how you simply love the currently available Ovaltine but would be most interested to find out the ingredients of the product you used to have in year X, they might possibly give you the details. You can then cross-check that with the Ovaltine-branded products available today in different countries and maybe order some from overseas that is a close match.

Sadly, the original Ovaltine mines worked out their last seam in 1972 and now we have only the inferior imported stuff from Uruguay, and you will be aware of the persistent accusations of using undersized gnomes at the face because the galleries are so long and low.
