The live version of chime that they played as their last tune had a 303 running all the way through it. Phil Hartnoll would twist the fuck out of it and it featured as a major part of tune.

I'm sure the Hartnoll brothers considerd Chime to be an "Acid House" tune when they released it.

But anyway let's not get into a debate about it, it's an amazing tune regardless.

I fucking love orbital.

Insides is probably my favourite album but Chime and belfast have to be the most enduring tracks.

Saw them live on the 99 tour in brighton and at glastonbury that year. Their live stuff is hard to beat.

I was at a pub near sandwich in Kent in 2002 and met their old next door neighbours from when they were kids.

They saw that I had an orbital T shirt on and told me all about them growing up.

It was pretty surreal. Apparently they are still best frinds with their parents and see the lads from time to time.

Was that 1994? That's the one I saw. Fucking great!

Hey, I was there too - one of the most fantastic experiences of my life, ever, of any kind. I still have a dodgy cassette bootleg of that set somewhere, just magic.

Liked 'em up until Insides then they went shit and churned out Orbital by numbers, pleasant melodies, shit beats and stoopid samples.

By the way - Higher State Of Consciousness has been scientifically proven to be shit - the original mix on Strictly Rhythm is way way better - Winky boy is a tool and way overrated though.

Yeah I completely agree, although the opening 2 tracks on Middle of Nowhere are wicked. Especially like the bit with the John Craven's newsround sample.

Green, Brown, Snivilisation, Insides - all fucking ace!
Saw them live for first time at tribal gathering 96 (or 97 - I forget).
Mesmerised by Halcyon and their visuals.

wow. i get to be all controversial. saw their "landmark", "milestone" farewell closing set at glastonbury last year was it? or year before, i dunno. But i thought it were boring, went nowhere, quite repetitive with the odd nice sound but far too significant for poor little me to cope with. :)

even their later stuff when they were repeating themselves / treading water, they STILL pissed on most of the competition.

amazing live, amazing on record, proved what a bunch of hippies Underworld were ;)
Was with you until the last 8 words  ;)

Lush and Belfast are my favourites, both are always in the running for last tune of the night at a party.

I'm quite partial to the Ray Keith and Beltram remixes of Chime that came out just after the original, first time I ever heard of Mr Keith.

I enjoy their spectacle torches as well.

Underworld? the odd good track but very much the latter-day Pink Floyd of dance. too smooth and linear for me. Orbital were more clanky and jagged...

Ahhhhh, the old Orbital v Underworld debate... Orbital no contest :D

My fave Orbital has to be Brown album, and its seriously tricky to choose. Love the track 'Planet of the shapes', obviously 'Lush' and 'Halcyon'. 'Walk now' is another great track...

Snivilisation is probably my close second. 'Sad But True' and 'Kein Trink Wasser' - amazing tracks.

totally agree. About the nth time I'd seen 'em, and by far the worst. Stopping after every tune for one final round of applause was a bad move, should've done a full set and milked it at he death.

I did - and do - love 'em, though. They did go off the boil a bit toward the end, but were always trying something new, like the Ian Dury tribute on their last album.

Fave track? Probably Are We Here? Or Chime. Or Halcyon. Or Lush. Or Girl With The Sun In Her Head. Or....
