Opera browser news

I've used Opera for years, but I've no idea what the things being discussed on this thread are. If I had to guess what a VPN was I still wouldn't have a clue even having read the posts.

I don't suppose I need to be using Opera at all.

Edit: to clarify meaning. Edit in red.

A VPN means your Internet connection goes through a different server so your ISP can't see what your doing. It stand for virtual private network.

I use Opera on the machine that I download stuff on, as it bypasses the blocks my ISP puts on some sites, such as Pirate Bay.

That's a little clearer, thanks. I can't imagine what use I'd have for such a thing personally.

It's probably of limited use. It also makes it harder for websites your visiting to identify you (but far from impossible).

As others have suggested if you have a serious need for privacy, then it's unlikely to be enough.

I use it to go on torrent sites blocked by TalkTalk - and to watch the odd youtube video blocked by record companies in the UK
Isn't Opera now owned by the Chinese...and therefore the last browser you should use for privacy?
I use it to get around blocks rather than privacy - i dont think its particular robust if you want to dissapear of the internet, no

Yup. The big advantage for me of doing it this way is that my torrent client doesn't run through a VPN. Seeing as I've got a 200mbs connection, I'd have to pay for a fairly serious VPN to take advantage of this. If I get a letter from Virgin then I may reconsider, but till then it will do.

You use Netflix IIRC - I think if you switch the VPN to pretend to be in the USA you get lots of US only Netflix content....for example
I use Netflix on my TV, not my computer. But thanks, I get the idea. Sounds like it might be something people enjoy doing.

I was using Opera's VPN to get round geoblocks (the odd youtube video or text at the Hathi trust that were blocked to non-US IP addresses and sites like libgen with access blocked by court order in the UK etc).

However it started getting a bit flaky back in the late autumn. First downloads started regularly failing with 'network interruption' messages. Posts at the Opera forum suggest this was a fairly common issue but there's been no fix as yet. And then in December they started unrolling Opera 49 with an 'improved' VPN. This involved dropping Surfeasy who had been providing the VPN service and moving it in-house.

Opera 49 updated with renewed VPN - Opera Desktop - Opera Blog post Dec 12th

This was accompanied with a change from providing VPN service on a specific country basis to a region basis (you can now only change to one of a number of global regions). Unfortunately this regularly fails at convincing geoblocked sites that you are in the right specific country as far as they are concerned. And downloads still failed.

Anyhow I switched off the Opera VPN and installed the Browsec add-on. All is good again, for the moment anyway.

(Incidentally I haven't tried it recently but before they added the VPN function you used to be able to circumvent geoblocks using the Opera Turbo function which serves cached versions of pages for people on slow connections).

i dont use it as involved or often as you but i noticed that VPN has gone really slow all of a sudden. And you choose by continent instead of country now. Not really a problem for me but I'll try that browsec thing

Whats the usefulness of this?
HTTPS Everywhere
i don't understand https

Never used it but it's developed by the EFF and the Tor Project. The main website for it is here and there's a FAQ there.

AFAIK it forces use of the more secure https protocol on web sites which offer it but that are badly written and don't default to it. Won't do anything for sites which don't offer it in the first place (or which draw in lots of third party content from other sites which don't).

Good people of Urban. Thanks to this thread I downloaded Opera VPN ages ago which let me use Facebook somewhere where it was blocked. I’ve just moved to Brazil and I’d rather like to access films via my Amazon (not the Brazilian, proper, Amazon) Prime which is in the UK. In the fullness of time I might change the card to a Brazilian credit card, but then I’d loose English language films, I suspect.
Opera VPN has been discontinued.
It offers a discount to some other service, SurfEasy, and a discount button (hurry before 30th April) that won’t open on the iPad. The regular service is $9.99/mo, which is rather a lot for the occasional rewatching of Paddington 2, or whatever.
Any suggestions for a low cost alternative?
Or should I just cancel Prime and download a book on the Kindle?

Are you sure it's been discontinued?
Click Open private window and it should still be there?
I just had an update and it's still there :hmm:

It's the stand-alone Opera VPN App that's been discontinued. As far as I can see, the VPN inside the browser will continue to work/be available.

For the umpteenth time I'm trying to remove Google from my life, but though I've changed the address bar browser default to DuckDuckGo, I can't work out how to get rid of the Google bar at the top of the speed dial start page. Any ideas?

I'm using an old version, but is there a triangle inside the search box. That lets me manage search engines which will presumably let you delete Google totally?

So the one I want rid of is the Google banner. I've got DuckDuckGo for the "enter search or web address" field". But I want to preferably replace, or failing that just remove, the Google strip. There's no triangle...

I started using it because the new settings page you have to agree too when you use google is too much . I put duckduckgo and ecosia on as search engines and the free vpn feature is pretty cool
