I managed to get a job programming while I was still studying. I was really lucky to find an employer who only required a reasonable understanding that trained people up internally. I think they were doing it because nobody with a degree would take a job doing 8bit pascal programming in 1999.
When I'd finished my degree it only took me a couple of months to find a 'proper' job. But that could have been because I had experience as well. Programming jobs usually require a degree and experience. Which begs the question "how does anyone break in at all?". Its usually because employers soon realise that there's not enough candidates and they have to take fresh graduates sometimes.
But yeah, I'd say an OU computing degree is a ticket to a job.
