I've enrolled myself on an OU course, it's just level 1 (60 points) to get me back into study but I'm really excited about it.

I'm doing An introduction to the social sciences: understanding social change.

I know there are other people doing OU, any tips?

I did that exact course a few years back.

It was good fun.

Attend the weekly sessions if you can. It's much easier to get into in when you're with other people studying the same stuff and it's an excuse to go with new friends to the pub afterwards.

Yes, good choice - its a good course and was my first step back into education some years ago. Sadly I have ended up as a social science lecturer though.

*warning - do not become a social science lecturer as it automatically bestows the status of twat upon you by 97% of the population*

My finger slipped while I was typing because I'm over excited.:D

You can't piss on my parade.
I did the introduction to social sciences , it was a good discipline and thoroughly enjoyable, even the summer schools were fun.

Good luck, and no I wasn't taking the piss, just getting started is an achievement in itself

I did that same course too. Don't write scene-setting stuff about the golden age after the 2nd world war, on your 2nd last essay, the guest tutor won't appreciate it, unless you only need 30% on it to pass the course and the rest of the essay is okay, in which fuck the wizened old tart, you were only trying to give her something different to read as an introduction instead of the same tired old ones she would have read on the other 30 essays. ffs.

I agree with turning up to classes if you can.

I got 98% on my transglobalisation essay. *puts trumpet down after blowing it loudly and immodestly* :o

Oh, and try to do a bit several nights during the week instead doing nothing at all all week then spending all day sunday in the Juice Bar on Coldharbour Lane boning up on Criminal Sociology...

I'm actually doing that course right now - started in October - Like it's been said I find the seminars really important for me. Don't get lulled into a false sense of security, the first month is easy, the first essay is easy but then all of a sudden the time spent studying seems to double and it all seems a lot harder, well for someone that hasn't studied for years anyway :) I'm on my 2nd essay now which is to do with how identities are formed. It is, overall, very interesting - good luck!

I've been quite interested in taking up an OU course recently, perhaps in psychology.

Is it very time-consuming fitting it in with a full-time job?

I did my degree from 91 to 99. All I can say is to pace yourself, allocate a certain amount of time each day (but allow for the ability to have SOME time off from it).

Good luck

Great stuff I did a BSc between 99 and 04 (in Germany so I was more or lesson my own) enjoyed it even though it was stressful at times keep at it and have fun.

Nice one sparklefish, sounds like you picked a good course.

I fit mine in with various full time jobs. I've written loads about the OU on other threads and they're well worth a search if you're interested.

I'm starting in February, just registered yesterday. It's a level 3 course, 60 credits. Culture, Identity and Power in the Roman Empire, which fits pretty well with my previous study in archaeological science.

Just got to hear back from the credit transfer people  Looking forward to it immensely, though slightly daunted at studying again.

Cheers! Will check them out.

Thanks for all your responses, I'm relieved to know the course I've picked is a good one. It was all rather spur of the moment after a few weeks of 'what am I doing with my life?' type anxiety.

I'm looking forward to it even more now.
