this is a thread for *freely accessible* online resources which can be used for academic research. so there's no point mentioning things like the times digital archive or nexis or the oxford dnb which would require an institutional log-in. i'll start you off with a few. http://www.intute.ac.uk/ intute is a portal which covers a wide range of subject areas. the sites it links to have been evaluated by teams of subject specialists and therefore can be relied upon. http://ahds.ac.uk/ ahds is a repository of online resources created for teaching and research. http://www.british-history.ac.uk/ british history online contains a wealth of information about british history, including the victoria county history and a load of sources, both primary and secondary. http://ethos.bl.uk/ you can download doctoral theses from ethos, although for some you'll have to wait a while. free online registration required. http://www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/index.html the british library online gallery contains thousands of images you can download and use in essays and so on. use the site map for navigation (there's no advanced search). there are more than 1,200 maps of london available here. http://www.doaj.org/ the directory of open access journals contains thousands of full-text academic journals with nearly 400,000 articles.
