One hit wonders we have known and loved

A few years earlier but what about Lord Rockingham's XI and 'Hoots Mon'?

Cheers - Louis Mac

That wasn't their only hit. They also brought out 'Wee Tom' a year later and it got to number 16.

Nope, Alphaville definitely only had one U.K hit. Well, under the name of Alphaville. They could have had one under their original name of Forever Young, though.

"Forever Young" was the name of their other major single, released a few months after "Big In Japan". I remember it, but without a "UK Chart History for Nerds" book to hand, I can't remember if it made the charts at all in the UK.

Often, a claimed "one hit wonder" released a follow-up single which charted at number 37 or something for a week, then disappeared. So, in the real world, they ARE one-hit wonders in the sense that they will only be remembered for one song, even though technically they aren't.

See Haysi Fantayzee and "Shiny Shiny" for details. That definitely charted, cos I remember watching them on TOTP and kind of fancying the girl, mainly cos she was wearing a fairly skimpy outfit. Plus ca change!

Indeed, Forever Young was the name of their other major single as well as being their original band name, and I think that it could have made the U.S charts (if not, it was very well known there, perhaps more so than Big in Japan), but it never ever made it into the U.K Top 40, and neither have ANY of their other subsequent records....to date. You'll have to go with me on this one, because I know this for sure.

anyone had Tinita Tikaram - "twist in my sobriety" yet?

No, because Tanita Tikaram has had other UK chart singles.

The one from around the same time as the one you mention that I can remember, was called "Good Tradition", off the same album as "twist in my sobriety".

Tamsin Archer - "Sleeping Satellite" :o
'In Your Care' and 'Lords Of the New Church' also made the top 40, although the second album failed to yield a hit single at all (being as it was much delayed and decidedly inferior), the album itself flopped and the reckord companie let her go. :(

John Waite - I ain't Missing You
Kenny Loggins - Footloose
Re-Flex - Politics of Dancing (One of the best tunes ever made. Most think it was Heaven 17).
Rockwell - Somebody's Watching
Wang Chung - Dance Hall Days
Furniture - Brilliant Mind
Oran 'juice' Jones - The Rain
It's Immaterial - Driving Away From Home
Robbie Nevil - C'est La Vie
Timex Social Club - Rumours

Harold Faltemeyer - 'Axel F'
Jan Hammer - 'Crockett's Theme'
It Bites - 'Calling All The Heroes' (although they released a further four albums).

And I think an honourable mention should go to Red Box, who actually had two hits. However, they weren't so much two hit wonders as one hit wonders twice, their record company having dropped them between the respective chart ascents of 'Lean On Me' and 'For America' and their respective follow-ups' complete chart bombings.

I've mentioned them before and I will mention them again:

One hit-wonder novelty records don't get much better than "Star Turn on 45 Pints" with "Pump up the Bitter"

Brew it! Brew it!

(he says, not reading the rest of the thread and just assuming that noone else has mentioned it yet :o )

My uncle wrote one song which Rolf Harris did as a Christmas single. It was called Happy Birthday Father Christmas.

I would have to agree...a worthy follow up to Splodgenessabounds' earlier paean to the mores of the public hostelry, 'Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps Please'. :)

From what I remember Starturn On 45 (Pints) were at the time whacking it out in the hit parade with Harry Enfield's 'Loadsamoney (Doing Up The House)' - another sublime sibling-free pop jewel - for novelty top banana status.

:eek::eek::eek:

How could I have failed to mention Barry McGuire's majestic 'Eve Of Destruction' here? Not only one of the finest one-hit-wonder tunes, but one of the greatest songs ever written. Word.

haha - both of which MP3s are available at the bottom of this page along with "Rat Rapping" :D
Excellent - excellent! :D

That's especially convenient as I only owned 'Rat Rapping' on tape until now :o . Funnily enough, the great rat wouldn't be entitled to OHW status as 'Rat Rapping''s follow up, an insightful interpretation of Elvis' 'Love Me Tender', clocked in at #32. Pity poor Kevin The Gerbil, however, whose sensitive reworking of Cliff's 'Summer Hoiday' stalled at a paltry #50... :( It sure beats anything Audio Bullies could come up with.

I read that as "Barry McGuigans "Eve Of Destruction" then and got really quite excited at the thought of that cover version......

That would have made an utterly inspired pre-big fight novelty rabble-rouser!

Didn't Furniture's 'Love your shoes' also make the charts?

ahem - Since Yesterday - Strawberry Switchblade

Abso-fucking-lutely

And Voice of the Beehive - "I Say Nothing" was another classic in a similar vein.

They also had big hits with 'I Walk the Earth', 'Don't Call Me Baby' and 'I Think I Love You'. Got their first two albums.

Did they?

Must've passed me by completely or maybe it's just one of those periods in my life that are just one big blank (for some reason ;) :D )
