For most home recording you'll get far better results using an amp sim than you will trying to record an amp. Most home users simply haven't got the space and/or mics to record an decent amp well.
Also, the volume at home as well makes a difference, IMHO. I can't even turn-up my Marshall practice amp to a 'decent' overdriven tone before the neighbours get angsty.
