What's the best area for eating/drinking out in?
Things I go for:
- No tourist menu; no obligatory menu in English
- Nice big, open restaurants/cafes
Also, what area to avoid, ie. toursit-menu-extravaganza.
J77 said:Cool - thanks, I've seen that place recommended on the guardian travel site - looks nice.
!) ...while you are in the area - Galleries Lafayette is close where you can go for free on its roof for a great view of the city ( or walk 10 minutes up to sacre coeur)!BlackSpecs said:For drinks go to les marais ( that's here you'll find those in the know as you asked earlier) ... it's a lovely area and has some nice galleries . but bring an umbrella it doesn't look to good this week-end !

Johnny Canuck2 said:But as I recall it's not really an 'in your face' gay area. And how else can you get to the Pompidou?

Or go and die in the catacoombes.

I'll be going with my girlfriend so it won't look like I'm trawling bars or whatever happensguinnessdrinker said:le marais is a bit of a gay area sometime, just in case he is not into it.

RenegadeDog said:Belleville was an underrated area in my view. When I lived in Paris, I found the whole place like a gigantic mausoleum, it left me cold, yet with a layer of something a little sinister just underneath. I found London a much more 'real' city.
But Belleville had something about it. I know it's quite a poor area, but it has this really nice little park with a view back over the city. I also love the Parc des Buttes Chaumont which is the nearest thing to a real park in Paris - fuck the Tuileries and all that wank.
J77 said:One more thing, we'll be getting there quite late tomorrow - so need to find a Brasserie or something which sells food after 10ish...
Thanks for the replys.

Plus, I live in Amsterdam - so as long as it's not "tourist gay", I think I can handle it![]()

guinnessdrinker said:if you live in Amsterdam and assuming you're coming by train, there should be somewhere open near the Gare du Nord.
I guess we'll head for the hotel straight away - somewhere in StG area.RenegadeDog said:Mind you, they can be a bit seedy round there can't they?

RenegadeDog said:Good idea. GdN is the St Pancras of Paris...
RenegadeDog said:Agreed. I quite liked the marais too. There was a nice little cafe there called apparement which was the only place I found that stood up to the image I had of a 'bohemian' cafe where you could lounge around all day.
Also the street with all the falafels was a god send.

Yesterday, went up to Montmatre to see Sacre Cour - which was very nice. A few people but they respected the no talking and cameras bit. Nice views of the city too. Then down to the Moulin Rouge bit - which is pretty dame compared with the RDL in Amsterdam

Johnny Canuck2 said:There's a street with a bunch of bars and clubs on it, close to place de la bastille. I suppose that might be getting out of the marais. I drank in some Havana-themed place there; nice ambience, expensive drinks.
J77 said:All in all, would probably want to live in Paris at some point![]()
(Want to learn French first though)
