One Day In Paris

Am off to Paris this weekend...

What's the best area for eating/drinking out in?

Things I go for:
  • No tourist menu; no obligatory menu in English
  • Nice big, open restaurants/cafes
  • Where the young people in the know hang out :)

Also, what area to avoid, ie. toursit-menu-extravaganza.

probably the more central arrondissements near the more touristic areas....

the larger cafes often serve decent food in their restaurant areas.

a really nice restaurant is "Chez Chartier"

it's really what you would expect of Paris/France and normal tourists could miss it easily

Cool - thanks, I've seen that place recommended on the guardian travel site - looks nice.

'tis great and gives you that "paris feeling" . just be prepared to be seated with other people at the same table ( last time we sat with a lovely old man who comes to eat there every day for the past 60 years:eek: :) !) ...while you are in the area - Galleries Lafayette is close where you can go for free on its roof for a great view of the city ( or walk 10 minutes up to sacre coeur)!

For drinks go to les marais ( that's here you'll find those in the know as you asked earlier) ... it's a lovely area and has some nice galleries . but bring an umbrella it doesn't look to good this week-end !

le marais is a bit of a gay area sometime, just in case he is not into it.

But as I recall it's not really an 'in your face' gay area. And how else can you get to the Pompidou?

no it's not in your face, but the poster was talking about drinks, so unwanted conversations might occur. but it's friendly anyway.

Belleville was an underrated area in my view. When I lived in Paris, I found the whole place like a gigantic mausoleum, it left me cold, yet with a layer of something a little sinister just underneath. I found London a much more 'real' city.

But Belleville had something about it. I know it's quite a poor area, but it has this really nice little park with a view back over the city. I also love the Parc des Buttes Chaumont which is the nearest thing to a real park in Paris - fuck the Tuileries and all that wank.

Find an Irish bar as soon as you arrive and spend the day drinking Murphys innit. Tis the British way.

Or go and die in the catacoombes.

Yeah - if you're seriously rich and can afford the 59 quid a pint (or whatever it is they're charging now). :)

Agreed. I quite liked the marais too. There was a nice little cafe there called apparement which was the only place I found that stood up to the image I had of a 'bohemian' cafe where you could lounge around all day.

Also the street with all the falafels was a god send.

I'll be going with my girlfriend so it won't look like I'm trawling bars or whatever happens :D

Plus, I live in Amsterdam - so as long as it's not "tourist gay", I think I can handle it ;)

One more thing, we'll be getting there quite late tomorrow - so need to find a Brasserie or something which sells food after 10ish...

Thanks for the replys.

the butte chaumont on the hill is absolutely great. it's not your average classic french park, they are much more formal.

if you live in Amsterdam and assuming you're coming by train, there should be somewhere open near the Gare du Nord.

it's definitely not tourist gay. just generally more trendy and popular with gay men. your girlfriend won't get jealous:)

Mind you, they can be a bit seedy round there can't they?

not really. if they want a bite to eat coming off the Thalys service, they'll get a decent meal. no great shake but useful after the journey.

There's a street with a bunch of bars and clubs on it, close to place de la bastille. I suppose that might be getting out of the marais. I drank in some Havana-themed place there; nice ambience, expensive drinks.

That's the Rue de Lappe area. And yes, that isn't the Marais. I used to frequent the Bar des Famillies which only charged 20 francs for a pint of stella, which was astoundingly cheap as most bars you were looking at 50 and up for a pint.

Paris has gone straight up there as one of my favourite cities :)

We were staying in Montparnesse it turned out - just below the Jardin de Luxembourg.

Found a nice cafe just above the Jardin, and frequented some along the neon lights of the Boulevard Montparnesse - tho' it was pretty expensive there.

Had a nice walk from Montparnesse, up to Ile de Cite - went in Notre Dame which is a bit of an overcrowded tourist hell-hole; then walked through to look at the Pompidou centre - stopping for coffees on the way; then to look at the Louvre - which as there weren't any queues we decided to have a butchers inside. Pretty nice building and an impressive collection - even got to stand in front of the old Mona without being jostled out of the way. We then heading back to Montparnesse via Bon Marche - was slightly worried when my gf started enthusing about the handbags and shoes ;) Yesterday, went up to Montmatre to see Sacre Cour - which was very nice. A few people but they respected the no talking and cameras bit. Nice views of the city too. Then down to the Moulin Rouge bit - which is pretty dame compared with the RDL in Amsterdam ;)

All in all, would probably want to live in Paris at some point

Here's a photo from the hotel room...

the area around bastille/oberkampf/faubourg st antoine became more fashionable a few years ago. I don't really go to Paris much anymore, so I don't know too much about it now
