the reason dizzee rules is because Showtime is genuinely terrifying. there are sounds and vocals and moods on that album - where he's literally spitting his lyrics - that make your blood run cold.

like all the best breakcore and jungle records you've heard slowed down and made even more abrasive. he has wit, charm, venom and commitment in spades.

awesome stuff. sounds like fucking Throbbing Gristle in places..

my lad said he rocked the place senselss last weekend here in Cambridge.

he said Dizzee really worked it - and stayed on stage nearly all night giving it some and getting the crowd going wild. :cool:

he also said i would have loved the basslines :cool:

if i wasn't such an ancient wrinkley, i'd like to have gone along. :( :o

it's weird, it's about the only genre where i really DO feel too old to go along. which smarts a bit.

i went to an arch party in Brixton which was grimey / dubsteppy (in that more Croydon way) but a proper Eski-dance or summat? nah, finally too old :(

just you wait 'til you're my age luv :(

.....and you will be one day!

not too far off.....

<cackle>

:D :p ;)

I was distinctly disappointed with "Showtime". It seemed he was trying a bit too hard to crossover and sell more and thus deserted the grime origins a little. It's still quite good but some way off "Boy In Da Corner", his white label stuff or his Basement Jaxx track. I think Kano succeeded better on his debut "Home Sweet Home" with the crossover thing, although Dizzee had the appeal of being the first there and also the Mercury to publicise him a little. Roll Deep's debut seemed to go down the same track as "Showtime". I'd love him to come back with something better for his third.

i thought Showtime was MUCH better than Boy In Da Corner. really dark, really vicious, like everything was related through gritted teeth
