On this thread, we are not ashamed of liking folk music

I was going to tip you as one of my tips of the moment actually Ruby, I love the stuff I've heard via your Myspace(s). Tis lovely!

Cheers!

We're playing at the Windmill in Brixton this Tuesday, as it goes <cough>

I'm a regular at some of the numerous 'folk sessions' that take place in pubs down here - sort of informal jam-just-turn-up-with-your-instrument-and-play occasions that happen on regular nights of the week.

It's the only time I get to listen to and appreciate music without worrying about mics and cables etc, or fighting back the urge to tell the c*nt behind the desk that they couldn't mix a cake, so it's quite therapeutic. :)

There's a *thing* in some folk (esp. some Irish jigs and reels) that triggers the same sensation as certain 303-esque Techno (William Orbit, Josh Wink etc) - a sort of 'hairs on the back of the neck' thing.

I heard it in Country and Western once, too - which really annoyed me, as I *hate* Country and Western.

My worst fear is when a fucking banjo turns up at a folk session - you just know that it's going to be 'bluegrass hell' in a few weeks after the first banjo appears. :(

You still have to worry about the acoustics of the blooming room if you're playing though  Well, not at sessions, but at folk clubs etc.

Anyone else like north-eastern folk music? Mainly 'cos my ex is a folk-loving Geordie, I've started listening to people like Alex Glasgow and Vin Garbutt ... and very good some of it is too. Vin Garbutt, in particular, is excellent, especially his live stuff: some lovely songs, and his banter between them is priceless.

Highly recommend Rachel Unthank and the Winterset, excellent live and they have a new album coming out later this month (I think)

Katherine Tickell?

Oh... And one bees introduced me to.

Martyn Bennett & Martin Low. The Hardland album is incredible.

Everyone on this thread has to check out End of History by Fionn Regan. The best album I've bought for the last two years, and I spend too much money on music! There is a fab vid of a single of his, Be Good or Be Gone, on You Tube - worth watching ;)

Bonnie Prince Billy great too, plus Adem, Bright Eyes...

Not if it's a tenor (4-string) banjo. I can think of at least 3 players up here that are really good at Irish picked tunes on this.
