OMG. I quite like Keane's "Everything's Changing" and Coldplay's "Yellow"

Fair enough. As I say, I'm not a fan... by any stretch. But I have to admit I've tapped along to both those tunes in the past... :D

I also remember (some viewers might want to turn away now) rocking out to James Blunt's Beautiful in a van full of old rastas crossing the mountains in St Lucia. They didn't know who he was, or anything about him. They just liked the melody. And it made sense to me too, belllowing along with a spliff and sunshine and sans-prejudice.

i was thinking someone in this post must have been taking the piss but then they;re big country and western fans in st lucia so maybe not.. :hmm:

Keane are OK on two grounds. The singer really has a voice, and they aren't a standard line up, so are forced to sound at least a little different from the average rock band.

Unfortunately Coldplay are as cool as dogsick in August. My first reaction to hearing Yellow was to panic that some bastard had released some old recordings of stuff that even Nick Drake thought was too sickly sentimental to release. Since then I have revised my opinion... downward.

However. As soon as you've made any music yourself you are no longer judged by what you listen to, and only on the basis of what you played last.

Ergo I am NOT cool.

Apparently Country and Western Music is popular right across the West Indies. A friend heard lots of it in Jamaica.

It's white soul music innit? :)

I agree with OU. I don't care how adept musicians are. I mean Kurt Cobain was not a particularly great singer or guitarist, but he had something quite 'other' about him.

Coldplay on the other hand - they're not actually a bad group, they aren't like Simply Red, Lighthouse Family, Smiths or Beautiful South. They're just totally totally anodyne.

Coldplay are rather big in Spain. Then again, Coldplay are probably quite edgy compared to their domestic SHITE. The Spanish language really isnt suited to pop/rock music. Really.

Most non-Anglo rock/pop music is shit, if we're being honest, isn't it?

I include West Indian in 'Anglo' before anyone shouts at me about that ;)

I mean you get the odd good band from other countries. I quite like Meshuggah from Sweden for instance... But largely...

I'd certainly never go so far as to say that I "like" Everything Changes by Keane. But I was surprised, the first time I heard it, at how much it sounded like late 70s Europop. It definitely has more than a whiff of Abba to it. I'm guessing Keane quite liked A-Ha when they were growing. Not what I was expecting them to sound like, that's all. I wouldn't scream that it be turned off and plead to be let out of the room if it came on a stereo. Everything Coldplay have ever recorded is ghastly though. Coldplay's Yellow sounds like somebody got in a time machine to go back and do a savage piss-take of Coldplay before they became Coldplay. The way he sings, with that crass little-boy-lost falsetto, and that horribly disingenuous catch in the throat; it's so calculating. And it's just plain lazy how he's just tossed off the lyrics, his band should have docked his wages – they're like the Chicken Song.

I like Keane - everything they've done tbh.

Coldplay vaguely annoy me but in the right mood "Fix You" leaves me all sniffly and I do really like "Viva La Vida" :o

i'd like to make it clear that my VERY qualified statement about Yellow (that it isn't complete shit) should in no way imply that I don't think the rest of their output sucks balls. As for Keane, just.. no.

I love the way you feel the need to come back and clarify it like a politician :D

It's like there's been a scandal and you feel the need to issue a special statement on the matter to clear the air with the public :D

Seriously though, does anyone really give two shits what other people like?

i do. my general rule is, if they don't like GA and/or RFTC, their opionion ain't worth shit :(

Rocket From The Crypt?

I liked their earlier stuff like Circa Now, which was somewhere between Pixies and Nirvana, but the later stuff like Scream Dracula Scream was decent too but not as good as that...
