Olmert facing fresh calls to resign

Olmert's been 'helping the police with their enquiries'. This is his seventh interview with them.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli police questioned Prime Minister Ehud Olmert for a seventh time on Friday as part of a corruption investigation that has jeopardized peace talks with the Palestinians and shaken Israel's political system.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said Olmert was questioned for 2 1/2 hours over a house he bought in Jerusalem before becoming prime minister in 2006. He is suspected of having received the house at a discount in exchange for promoting a Jerusalem construction project while he was the city's mayor. Police suspect irregular building permits were granted.

Rosenfeld said Olmert's wife, Aliza, was also questioned for the first time in connection with the probes targeting the Israeli leader. He said he did not know whether she would be questioned further.

Nino: First, the whole thing about the money only has to do with his mayoralship of Jerusalem. It has nothing to do with the Premiership, although therre is also a case involving his actions while in charge of the privitisation of the Israeli Banking System.

I think Livni has the strongest chance, although a part of me is rooting for Mofaz since he would be the first non-Ashkenazi PM and that would be a great step forward. Still, the nation needs the best leader, not a social hudrle removed per se.

I was talking about the case you iniated this thread with, the monies received from a Jewish American, as well as the first case that we have been discussing as well in a round about way (my mentioning of the amount paid, etc).

Oh dear...

Israel's police force has recommended that the prime minister, Ehud Olmert, be indicted for bribery, money laundering, fraud and breach of trust, following an 18-month investigation......

It was to be expected: he's been taking bribes and skimming for donkey's years and he's finally been caught. Of course, he will hang on as caretaker PM.

Well Nini: What tiume shall I bring your non-alcoholic wine? OLMERT IS OUT. I know you will sleep easier this night in your wee lonnie liile buntting.

No Nino, he is no to have Livni relace him. FM Livni won the Kadima Primary this weekend, beating out 2nd place Foreunner TM Shaul who in turn is claiming irregularities at the polls for my own 2 Shekels I have nothing whatsoever about. Just trying to salvage a sinking political star and that is how it goes.

Livni now has to form, a Cabinet among lesser parties for a Unity Govt within 90 Days or the last step of the reelection process to keep her election going and that should not have much problems so I do see Livni as the next PM and as a member of Kadima I can breathe a sigh of releaf.
