Olives

Stuffed with Jalepenos? That sounds great! it sounds like I haven't investigated stuffed olives enough. Pimento got a bit boring so I stopped with the stuffed.

I LOVE olives. Currently loving decent olive bread lightly toasted and dipped in posh olive oil.

We buy these olives that are stuffed with feta: delicious.

cheddar cheese? :(

Not very authentic or adventurous is it? I spose it was written in the 80's, the transition period period between traditional wholemeal and modern vegetarian cooking. Any semi-hard cheese does the job, it's nice with havarti.

Just enjoyed a packet of Crepso green olives infused with chilli oil.....my faves seem to be big fat green olives...pref. stuffed and spicey

Nando's (Peri Peri chicken resturant) do lovely olives... bit fat green ones. Could do with a little less garlic perhaps, and adding some black olives, rather than having just green ones.

Never heard of havarti. I have a few 80's cook books too, and the only cheeses mentioned in them are cheddar, and cheddar. The recipe sounds good - do you think it would work with paremsan?

Sainsbury's do some with chilli and fennel seeds, they're lovely.

These are indeed the Daddy of supermarket olives.

If you are in London, olive-lovers could do a lot worse than get themselves down to Borough Market for a occaisional (ie. bit expensive) treat. The selection of olives to be had found there is amazing.

Last ones I had were massive green Queen olives stuffed with raw garlic

Bit unpopular for a few hours after though!! :D

I've just realised that black olives are good for nothing but decorating pizzas with. They're black, so of course theyre gonna look good whatever you add them to. But FFS they're flavourless compared to green ones.

Buy olives from your local turkish / greek etc deli from the tubs. Never bother with the supermarkets. The local guys have invariably got better stock and it's a quarter of the price.

I dont have a local turkish deli unfortunately. I have a local 'mediterian' deli though. I suspect that it means mediterranean in a different language. Dunno if they sell decent olives. They're probably too depressed to sell decent olives. After all, it is Brum innit.

I've been hunting for the ultiamte Olive supplier for a few months now. Ive tried Turkish delis, the ones that come in jars, the ones that come in tins...

...I'm sorry to say that the nicest I have found are a supermarket brand: Sainsbury's Mixed Olives (Black, Green + Kalamata) in Chilli + Garlic Dressing. The're not the cheapest at £2 a tub but the tubs quite big and they taste amazing.

The secret to olives seems to be the dressing really - olives in brine are bit rank i think.

PS: Did you know that a black olive is just a green olive thats been allowed to ripen for longer? I forget which, but one of the olives has a lot more calories than the other.

Stanley Edwards mentioned it earlier in the thread, but I always thought it was obvious. To me, most green versions of fruits are unripe versions of the otherwise coloured versions. Chillis, peppers, tomatoes, mangoes, bananas, etc...

Obviously there are many exceptions to the rule

Amazing. This thread existed for ~13 years and no one has yet mentioned Nocellara olives. I like all sorts of olives but these make all the rest taste like sawdust by comparison.
I do tend to buy cheap (Baresa Pepper Stuffed Olives) from Lidl :hmm:

My ex is Spanish and in Spain they grow a lot of olives. As such it is a National duty to eat olives before every meal. I got quite used to it and rather like olives.

My absolute favourites are olives cored stuffed with anchovies, yum!

Ooh I discovered them after starting thread - they are lush.

Olives are horrible. :(
Horrible? They're fucking vile! Lying little fuckers, pretending to be grapes. Imagine the lasting damage they might do to a 5 year old who found a jar of them in the cupboard while his mother was out shopping, and thought it was a jar of grapes! :hmm:

My mate, Billy loves them. He also loves pot noodles, with a dollop of tomato ketchup mixed in, and tinned ravioli is one of his favourite dishes. He is, without doubt, a wrong-un, and 2+2=olives.
