Oldest surving ghost station in London?

FWIW the oldest extant station in London is Deptford, opened in 1836, although to look at it you wouldn't realise since it's been rebuilt at least once. The old carriage ramp is still visible, though, and apparently there's a project in train (no pun intended!) to restore it. The viaducts that trains run along from London Bridge as far as Greenwich all date from the same period.

At the other end of the same line, the old platforms of Spa Road station, the original terminus of the London and Greenwich railway, can be seen from trains east of London Bridge station. That's got to be the oldest disused station in London.

The Spa Road you can still see is on a different site to the original Spa Road terminus of the London & Greenwich Railway (which was to the north), so I don't think Spa Road gets the prize either.

I'm going to have to think about this one...

After some pondering... Correct me if I'm wrong!

Oldest abandoned station of which significant traces remain:

Lea Bridge (1840-1985) - Platforms intact and 1960's (not original) station building in situ

Oldest abandoned station which is intact (i.e. platforms and original building):

North Woolwich (1847-2006) - Still wholly intact, including original station building (although it had not been used as such since the 1980's)

Ah. I was aware Spa Road had been moved, but I thought you could still see bits of the original.

I'm pretty certain all that you see today are remnants of the 1843 station, as the repeated viaduct widenings over the years would have presumably swept away all traces of the 1836 one.

I saw that Strand had a station at street level while walking along there on Thursday. What line will that have been on?

It's Aldwych on the Picadilly Line.

Renamed as to avoid confusion with the other nearby Strand station on the Northern Line (at the time the City and whatnot line). Then in the seventies they renamed the whole Charring Cross, Strand, Trafalgar Square set of stations to what we have now.

Getting somewhat OT, but

Reigate is the home of the oldest purpose-built road-tunnel in Britain, possibly Europe (1826)

and the earliest concrete pedestrian bridge in Britain (1910) on Reigate Hill
