Older workforce - how will things change?

Am going to have no choice but to keep working for as long as i'm able.....no assets, savings or pension...just had to change jobs and am on minimum wage..there really is not a lot out there for a 53 yr old with no decent qualifications (just experience) and i do think in the world of people out there that haven't had a 'career' there aren't a lot of choices...

How does one retire at 48? Does he have a decent pension in place or something?

He did work hard though. He was once in a meeting for 72 hours. Didn't even change his pants once, the dirty bastard

I know plenty of people work hard and don't get anything like the rewards he did.

What I see is a lot of older people losing their jobs and then finding a way to make a living doing something that they loved without an official "employer". It's something that doesn't pay well but provides a little more satisfaction. One guy I know took up rebuilding old cars and selling them. Another, building furniture. It's a step down economically for most of them, but the alternative in many cases is permanent unemployment.

Both my dad and my father in law started their own business in their 40s after losing their job in the early 90s recession - apparently quite a common thing among that demographic.

People are talking a lot about 'portfolio careers' now, ie people having multiple roles and short term projects they work on. Be interesting to see if older people pick up on that. Of course, it is a classic example of a phenomenon that's fine and all cool for basically well off people and translates to poorer people as plain old shit and insecure jobs.

Old people will all be selling copies of 'life extending' branded drugs illegally to each other whilst young people are forced to sell the latest cheap fix to kill them earlier. Middle age people will be working part-time whilst selling illegal tobacco and recreational drugs.

I have no idea whatsoever where all the money to support these economies will come from.
