It is quite wonderful. While we're on the subject of Asian films that aren't violent/horror/anime types, Takeshi Kitano's Dolls is quite a brilliant, lovely little film too.

My fav Miike film. Absolutely gorgeous.

I rate Kishiwada Shonen Gurentai higher for Miikes mild stuff (though there is a broom up the arse).

Korean stuff? I love Kim Ki Duks films, they all look lovely. Whats that one that is all one shot in real time? Anyway I have it on top of my telly but I can never find time to watch it what with a baby during the day and wife at night that refuses to view it.

All these questions are answered quite clearly in the film.
I would just give up watching any more films ever again if you can't answer any of those questions after watching Old Boy from start to finish. In fact I think you should perhaps give up in general.

1. Oldboy's character is called Oh Dae su, Oh dae su is in the police station for drunk and disorderly, then his freind joo hwan picks him up. Oh dae su has missed his daughters birthday, so calls her from a payphone, then joo hwan talks to oh dae su's wife on the phone, thats the point when woo jin kidnaps oh dae su and locks him away for 15 years.

2. Im not going to tell you that, otherwise it'll spoil the film, the whole point of it is oh dae su is trying to work out what he's done to deserve such treatment

3. Yes 15 years i.e. the time it takes oh dae su' daughter (mido) to develop into a young woman

4. Yes the women who oh dae su meets at the sushi place, who then looks after them, and he then bones is mido, oh dae su's daughter, they were hypnotised to fall in love.

5. Yes he fucks her.

6. The 'bloke on the phone' is called woo jin, he is the guy that locks oh dae su up, he's trying to build a 'monster', and to get revenge for telling everybody his secret.

7. Joo hwan is the internet cafe owner, he was oh dae su's best freind at school (evergreen high), joo hwan actually told everyone joo hwans secret.

8. He went to all the chinese restaurant tasting the dumplings, so he could then track the takeaway delivery driver all the way to floor 7 &1/2 which is the storage facility that oh dae su was locked up in.

I know I'm answering an old post, but I am pretty much slightly oldboy obsessed. Let this forever be the urban75 idiots guide to oldboy.

Is part of the revenge trilogy made by chan wook park....... the other 2 are 'sympathy for mr vengeance' and 'sympathy for mrs vengeance' I wouldnt recomend the other 2 unless you are a die hard chan wook park fan.

And yes hollywood are doing a remake and yes it will be shit.
