Old Sony ultraportable laptop: what would you do?

I looked on ebay and one went for £70 - and I imagine that had a working battery!
I'd rather give it away to someone I know who really needs it, to be honest.

No probs I'm just watching one on ebay atm. Didn't know your ex was in need, it's nice to help people out like that

Swarfy - was just a thought! :) I just want a portable laptop, that doesn't cost a fortune (The Dell's too expensive for me) and you can actually buy rather than everywhere being out of stock.:(

She's got a near ancient beast of a PC that is still running - and I kid you not - Windows 95.

It runs on a thimbleful of RAM and you can go for a cup of tea in the time it takes for an application. It's unbelievably painful.

Is the AAaiaiaiaaAAEEE thing not readily available then?

Thing is, wouldn't you need something with a reasonable amount of grunt as you do a lot of photography and image work??

You are just gonna have to save up your pennies young lady.

Crumbs! Sounds like my Mum's old one! But 300odd quid (council tax rebate money!!) later and she's got a proper good un, an acer with a huge fuck off screen. and you know what she does on it, plays Mah Jong :(:D

Is there already a thread on your ultraportable options anywhere?

Well I can't seem to find one, maybe I'm looking in the wrong places!

I only want it for mobile interneting and email and stuff, I have a PC (which needs wiping cos it's gone slow!!) that I paid fortune's for a couple of years ago for any memory hogging tasks and storage. ;)

you could just keep it for nostalgic reasons and stick it in the attic.....then pull it out in 10 years time and marvel at how alien and clunky it looks....was in the Science museum a couple of years ago and they had (probably still have?) all the old video recorders and computers etc.....they looked so wierd and yet felt so familiar at the same time...

I think I'm going to give it away. No amount of reinstalling is going to change the unpredictable battery life which renders the machine totally useless as a work machine and I cant see how changing the OS will improve that.

Perhaps give it to someone deserving who can use it as a desktop. It has a vga out, right...?

well add to the collection!!......I've given old pc's away and to be honest it's not worth the hassle....you feel guilty when it keeps conking out and won't run the modern things they expect it too.....if you want to help her out....find a few mates with a few spare HDD, graphics cards, mobo's etc and nab a tower from the back of an office.....

I've got an even older tiny Sony laptop running Windows 98. the battery is pretty useless, but with a wireless card stuck in it and Opera as the browser it's great for general surfing on trains or wherever there's a power point. Still looks pretty slick for an 8 year old machine too.
