Old School Hip Hop Thread

So is there a cut-off date? 84? 86? 88?

1990. Which I think is quite late for Electro, but it will allow the inclusion of some seriously good Hip Hop (Big Daddy Kane, Ultramagnetic MC's etc).

should be able to do that. what about old funk tracks used by turntablists (apache etc)?

As long as you stay within the parameters set then what you record is entirely up to you. If you want to include some of the old funk tracks that were used as 'breaks' then that is up to you, it might be useful to include a track that uses that 'break' on the CD to provide some form of context. Otherwise there might be a danger of recording a record that lasts 7 minutes when most B-Boys are only interested in the 45 second break somewhere in the middle of the tune?

Would love to join in with this but all my old electro / rap is at my parents house. Maybe i'll try download some old favourites.

You have TWO DAYS left if you wish to take part in this Electro-Funk/Old School Hip Hop CD celebration, so get your address and name to me and prepare to "just feel it"!

i'll be recording mine over the next few days. you may find my dj skillz wanting, but my tune selection is second to none (if a little obvious...)

Gotta recommend this exhibition again, its under Phonica Records on Poland Street in Soho.

Went at the weekend, some amazing photos and original vinyl (straight from Charlie Chase's collection) and picked up a limited edition LP of Cold Crush v Fantastic Romantic battling live at Harlem World in 1981 with the catalogue. Maximum :D :D :D

Okay, after a slight delay, today is the day when I will send all participants an address to which they can send their CD.

The only person who has yet to send me an address is mwgdrwg, I need your address TODAY otherwise you might miss this CD swop.

Remember, "you won't feel the same, it's like an everlasting torch that burns in the rain".

Can I act utterly stunned at the fact that Tone Loc's "Funky Dold Medina" has not been mentioned? Fuck me that song is off the hook. Also check DJ Mark The 45 King's "The 900 Number".

Isn't it all over now? If theres still time I'll do one or put me on the list for next time. Only just got round to downloading a few oldies off soulseek so couldn't enter before.

Some good tracklistings there so far.

PS has anyone got a copy of an old electro record called "Nonline" by IMS sample here

Basically, no. I just saw the thread yesterday, scanned through it and didn't see "Funky Cold Medina" or "The 900 Number" mentioned so I thought I'd nominate them. They are ace you've got to admit.

i recorded the records at +2 btw... erm, just sayin likes  ;)

got your pm boogie boy, and; no probs. :)

'Non Line' I.M.S
1984 Emergency Records

Haven't got the 12" Squelch, but it does appear on the 'Let The Music Scratch' compilation issued on StreetWave in 1984, catalogue number MKL1, which is worth listening to!

I will see what I can do about finding out if it was issued as a 12", and where there might be a copy.

Some great stuff here guys.

Afraid I'm unable to join you this time around - we moved house nearly a month ago and, despite repeated promises from Mr Hippybuilder, still haven't got a roof on a big chunk of the flat. We're just about living out of suitcases, but the boxes of vinyl and cds remain largely untroubled. I've been listening to the same music for weeks and weeks now. It sucks..
:(

Next time eh. I'm envious of some of the selections though...

:)

Finally...

managed to finish this off - in the post now...... :)
