Old Labour man gives great speech

When they're the largest and most powerful force we've got? Why be so negative? What's the point?
I think that exactly sums up why I'm so negative; this is the most powerful force we've got - and it's a largely impotent, clapped-out, ineffctual empty shell. There's no mass activism in the unions - just a few dedicated lay-officials if you're lucky (if you're unlucky just a few awful lay-officials). I don't even count the top beaurocrats in this.

Just watch the government and employers completely ignore the union-led protests over pensions and the like. The unspoken words hanging in the air will be "what are you going to do about it, then? How are you going to make us change our actions?" to which the unions no longer have any reply.

Well, we shall see.
Indeed - but I hope nobody is surprised by the outcome.

I mean, how many workplaces will actually come out on strike apart from a few job centers and benefit offices?

Ive just mailed Mr Sedgemore and thanked him for his speech too. Its nice to know they arent all puppets on a string.

I hope you are!
I really, really hope I am too.

But I suspect it'll be the usual non-event followed by the usual hollow-triumphalism from parts of the left ("brilliant", "massive" "fantastic" etc etc). Meanwhile, the same old crap continues unabated...

This thread is very depressing. :(

Is Blair planning to join forces with Bush again or something similar? Why are all these draconian measures being pushed through - are the powers-that-be preparing for bigger things to come?

The way I see it, they are barricading themselves behind bigger and bigger walls, installing more and more security measures to protect themselves because of the crimes they have committed (and the crimes they have yet to commit) against humanity. No government, other than one of the most hated, would need to take such tyrannical steps to protect themselves from the people (fuck all this 'terrorist' BS).

I wonder what they are up to? :mad:

Problem with tv is that it rarely makes you think. It encourages passiveness and you to empty your brain and emote on a very basic level. I can (obivously) only speak from personal experience, but only recently have I become really aware of this to the point where I cant take half of the stuff seriously and the other half is beneath contempt. Very rarely is there something really worth watching.

Perhaps there really is some shit waiting to hit the fan that we just don't know about yet? Something so awful that might just make people wake up? Who knows anymore?

Unplugged my TV aerial 6 months ago and haven't watched it since, stick that in yer piety.

Having said, that if I visit me parents I end up watching the simpsons as much as possible, but even the new season of the simpsons is absolute shit compared to the previous ones, which is the absolute last straw. Whats your take on it? Seems pretty accurate to me to say that TV is essentially bollocks and really not worth watching.

Got fuck all to do with "greater than everyone else", if self-satisfied means "glad I did it 'cos everytime I watch TV elsewhere it makes me want to kick the screen in" then yeah I'm self satisfied.

spend more time on.......

This fucking site for a start.

Ever get the feeling that there are more and more trolls coming on here in order to disrupt genuine discussion? This thread was excellent but is now descending into shit - the troll on this thread isn't even presenting an opposing view, just here for the purpose of derailing things.

I say we just ignore the fuckers ;)

Back to the thread subject;

This may make you feel a bit more optimistic;

Internment without trial has already been tried within the borders of the UK - and it didn't fucking work then, did it?

Yep, but you know how the old saw goes; "those who will not learn from history..." :(

idris - it didn't work but it makes me sad to think of the suffering that people will go through while we prove once again that it won't work :(

but . . . actually it DID work - enough of the hard men were taken out of circulation to bring about the so called 'peace process'.

With the victory for the 'political struggle' - internment was wound down

Depends what you mean by "work", Idris. Like most law 'n' order measures, it's entirely possible to view its purpose as being to stoke fears about law 'n' order rather than to solve anything. It feeds on itself. This is pretty much all US (and increasing UK) politics has been about for thirty years now.

Mind you, at least in NI it provoked such a reaction that it had to be dropped.

It doesn't really. It doesn't appear to be deterring them from trying again. Whether it works or not th whole process isn't going to be pleasant.

The thing about the whole setup is the underlying reasons for it. WTF are they?

Eh? Internment was wound down by the mid-70s nearly 20 years before the start of the present peace process.
