Old Jags

What type of insurance do you expect to buy for an XJS, and for how much?

cheapest i've been quoted is just over five hundred fully comp. i was chatting to the bloke selling the one in the pevious post and he only pays two fifty. i haven't phoned the company he put me onto though, yet.

Discokermit, it's a 4.0 early facelift, in my opinion the nicest looking as the later facelift cars have those big ugly colour coded bumpers. I couldn't live with a V12 and the horrible thirst even as a (2nd) weekend car. Bought it in Sutton Coldfield after looking at an awful lot on the internet, and this one seemed just right even before I went to see it. 61,000 miles and an elderly ex-owner who spent a fortune on it.
On the way back the trip computer said it was doing 26.7 mpg, but I was driving like an old man :D. Since then (a month ago) it 's been sitting at around 23.4 mpg

Insurance for me and my missus is £269 fully comp, ungaraged, unlimited mileage. We had to transfer the full no claims from our Polo diesel and re-insure that with zero NCB which was a pain in the arse, but worked out £100 cheaper than previously.

If you've been looking you'll know that prices have risen on XJSs so I'm well happy with mine and when I look around it and drive it, it's hard to believe it's 19 years old. :)

Have a look at Clarkes for nice ones, but they're a premium. http://www.clarkesjaguar.co.uk/

Discokermit, here are some others which look decent around the price you've been looking at for pretty high milers:

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C219027 You've seen this one and it looks pretty good for the price.

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C228147 Why put a leaper on it? :(

Good luck with it. :)

I do like a jag, and around the corner from where I live is a Jaguar second hand dealer, on the Upper Clapton Road, near the roundabout, usually have a load of lovely jags on display

clarkes are too pricey for me. those links are all on my list! i am put off by the leaper on that last one, the car looks awful with it.

i quite fancy a celebration model. i like the sound of the aj16 engine. who are you insured with? i'm going to give footman james a call as i heard they were pretty good.

We just went onto the Meerkats and the best price was from a company called Diamonds. Was with Footman James for the TVR until recently, and have now moved to Heritage, as they were a bit cheaper and FJ pissed me around a bit when it came to renewal, and couldn't renew over the phone. There are loads of insurers in the back of any copy of Classic & Sportscar magazine.

That Celebration looks pretty good for the money, so does the manual. :)

yeh, i really fancy the celebration but it's a bit too far away as i've got to get my brother to drive me there. i think the manual has trumped it though as it's a manual and also my favourite colour. going to see it early next week.

To be honest I've never driven an AJ16 engined Jag, but have had 3 AJ6s, 2 3.6s in an XJS and a Sovereign and now in the 4.0 XJS.

I'd imagine they're probably a little smoother, but to be honest in the real world, I doubt you'd really notice much of a difference. Get in a 16-20 year old 4.0 XJS and you can just waft along at 70 in near silence on the motorway or put your foot down on a dual carriageway and it'll growl and propell you forward making other traffic look like it's standing still.

The 3.6 XJS felt a little sportier in the noise department if I really think about it, more like an old Aston, whereas the 4.0 feels slightly smoother. Maybe because my old 3.6 was a bit of a beaten up cheapee, compared to the pampered one I have now. :D

Saw this for sale a while back, maybe overbudget but looked lovely:

Worth having a read through this forum too:

Plus obviously the Jag section on Pistonheads.

If you get the manual, will you bring it up the M11 so I can have a ride and see what it's like. :D

looking at this one sunday,

media

then the manual on tuesday. think it's going to be a toss up between the two.

*waits for Wednesday* :D

I'll try and get a picture of mine up over the weekend.

Unusual wheels on that Aubergine one, haven't seen those before.

i don't like the look of those wheels. may have to change them if i get it. i fancy putting quad lights in as well.

Nice one. :D

Pretty rare car, the 4.0 manual. Haven't seen many for sale at all, so if you look after it and even just keep it for a couple of years, you should easily get your money back and a little more. :)

How was the drive back, did you notice the points and nods you get from other driveres and people on the street? :D In the month and a half of having mine, I've only seen one other one on the road.

Enjoy. :)

*I'll have the 10% finders' fee in the form of a cheque, if that's OK* :)

cheers for the tip off, griff. i've invested your finders fee in a commodity that is rapidly increasing in value and is kept in my petrol tank! when we meet up and compare jags i'll get you a beer.

today i got sent for the sandwiches at work and had a dozen blokes in the greasy spoon admiring her.
