Old Jags

Griff

Feeding the foxes
Watching that James May wine programme last night and seeing him driving round the Burgundy wine region in that convertible XJS really got me missing my old XJS.

Cheap as chips to buy, all that leather and walnut, loads of power, British, instantly recognisable, bit of an villain's image. Just a teeny weeny bit uneconomical though.

So let's devote a thread to decent old Jags.

My father-in-law has one of these:

In the garage, sitting quietly and waiting to be used. - it never is.

:(

(Daimlers count for this thread yeah?)

Last time I was there, I hadn't passed my driving test....in February however, I am gonna ask if I can give it a go!

Proper bench seats in the front too.

I persuaded a client to buy an early 90's XJ6 for about £500.

Really was one hell of a car for the money.

10mpg (my client runs a company big on being 'environmentally friendly') and it's terrible reliability means it's now been replaced by an ex-fleet passat :(

I had a lovely silver 1989 XJ6. Bought in Worthing, 1 elderly owner, low mileage, full service history and quiet as a whisper.

Great car until some lorry drove into it when it was parked overnight. Completely written off. :(

My uncle had one of these, a MkIX Jaguar, when I was very young. I only vaguely remember it - a great big red thing, with squashy leather seats and a permanent, comforting smell of pipe-smoke. It made you feel important, sitting in its gentlemen's-club interior as it purred along.

In the end he got sick of driving it in London traffic and its 10mpg thirst got a wee bit expensive. IIRC it wasn't ultra-reliable either, so it ended up being sold.

if we're talking old jags:

Beautiful, innit? It's just how an old sports car should look - big headlights, long swooping wings, cutaway doors, long louvred bonnet, aeroscreens ...

I spent a happy half hour chatting to the owner of one at a classic car show years ago. It had a fascinating history - It had been hidden in a barn in Jersey and covered with junk so as to stop the Germans finding it during WW2. And when he started it up, the noise it made...

I'd love to drive one.

A mate of mine recently sold his V12 E-Type Roadster for about £25,000.

He took me for a spin round the M11/25 and had to stop as the boot flew open. :D

Quite a kick to it, a 5.3 V12 4 speed manual.

Im afraid yer all wrong when you start talking fat jags with the big soft straight 6. Heres the daddy of them all. You slags..

None of that effete vinyl roofed hermasexual Inspector Morse shite

The only downer is that that are terrible unreliable rust ridden expensive to repair cars, but you dont buy one to commute 120 miles a day do you ?

There was a company a few years ago that actually offered to sell you a brand new Mk2 completely made from new parts , I haven`t seen them advertise for a long time so maybe it didnt work out but I always fancied the idea and it wasn`t outrageously expensive.

There have been a few of the years. I think JD are now the leaders in the field these days.

A nice 3.8 Coombs-spec MkII in Gunmetal with red leather & wire wheels would be my dream 4-door car. With a few modern touches like air-con.

*goes off to buy a lottery ticket*

Everyone loves old Jags. It's the fact that if you want a car that you can reliably drive every day, then you need a second car that puts most people off. They're works of art, and like most art they work best standing still.

The Pilarless Coupe , great looking car . They used to be almost given away in the mid 80`s , £ 1500 would have bought you a beaut , what do they go for now ?
