Never ever ever do number 5 and then save the settings to your raw file ever, you will guarentee that you are essentailly burning the negative permenantly if you do this...
As one measure of protection, you could save it as a copy, although it would be prudent to keep the originals (read-only) some place else and have a working copy with which to play.

It can't change the data though; that's just a load of proprietary format data that doesn't mean anything until it's converted into something meaningful. It's not even an image, it's just sensor values. Bibble might change some headers in it but can't bugger it up; you'll still, with any given settings, produce the same results again & again forever.

Edit to add: I use Adobe Camera RAW (CS2) and it generates those XMP files. It does also seem to 'modify' the .NEF (RAW) files but as I say, it can't be the sensor data.

well i think you'll find it does change the data as it offers to replace the orginal file... there's two seperate buttons for precisely this reason.... also once you have altered the contrast brightness or anything else and save that it is essentially writting that information into the data set...

But Photoshop etc can't save RAW - why would it?

That's not true at all - for me, the process doesn't alter the RAW file, it generates an XMP settings file. Even if it did, it wouldn't alter the underlying data.

[cough]

It's a preference in ACR whether it's saved in a separate database or in an XMP sidecar file

I'm using Raw Shooter essentials there's a option "As shot" which puts all the settings back to how they were when i first opened the file so therefore the data can't permanently change or am i missing the point here?
