I think that the one, nasty looking little bugger.

Alien - apart from the crap computer that displayed text on its screen at rates slower than a 1960's teletype.
The great thing was you only ever saw glimpses of the alien until the end, reminiscent of Hitchcock's Psycho, leaving your mind to fill in the rest to great effect. Also the timing was brilliant, e.g. the point where the baby version bursts out of John Hurt's chest after having previously relaxed the audience with the space equivalent of the middle class dinner party.

Why do people dig Aliens so much? It's bloated, dull in places and replaces the horror with action

At the time Aliens was the most breathlessly intense film I'd ever seen and it got a reaction from audiences unlike few films I'd experienced in a cinema. I think the directors cut does draw things out for too long though but I really don't think the film is ever dull. Maybe it's effect has been diluted by now because it redefined the action film and many films since then have copied what Aliens did first (the smartass banter between the marines, the "one fucking thing after another"-structure)

Aliens also expanded on and subverted many of the themnes in the original in a way that was genuinely smart. The way the film developed Ripley's character was also consistent with the first film and very satisfying. If the first film was about rape and pregnancy then the second one was about motherhood. Like Ripley we never quite trust the android after having seen the first film, etc, etc.

It was intentional to shift the genre with the second film and I thought it was a great idea. The horror and tension were still there IMO, but if the first film was the best ever ghost train, then the second one was the best ever rollercoaster till then. As I said above the original is still the best, but this was one of the very few sequels I've seen that didn't dissapoint.

Oops edited because I've realised the question I answered was about Aliens and not Alien.

Other than the guns, I liked Aliens for the way it portrayed a group of crack marines having their asses kicked and falling apart while it happened - Hudson also get's some of the best lines in cinema.

PLus, Newt is that rare thing - a non-annoying child. When she says 'We'd better get inside because they mostly come at night. Mostly', the 2nd mostly manages to convey kiddie innocence combined with fear of something terrible.

Aliens makes great use of suspense to create a really unerving horror pic.

  • Dank dark tunnels where you know something is there out to get you but you cannot see it.
  • Tapping into our urban myth horror of something growing insider you and bursting out.
  • Helplessness against a big nasty monster seemingly impossible to stop.

Add to that the enemy within of corporate betrayal and some action and you've got a blinder of a plot and a film.

Don't care what you say, its genius.

In all fairness, that's exactly what the first film did perfectly well. If the sequel had only repeated this it wouldn't have been as good as it is.

Agree what many have said. The first is excellent horror, the second great action. I prefer the latter possibly just for the dialogue.

Some fucking memorable quotes there:

"We'd better get back, 'cause it'll be dark soon, and they mostly come at night... mostly."

There was an episode of South Park when Cartman can't stop saying the above quote :D

And of course there is the immortal and U75 old favourite "Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be safe".

You reckon? I think she's annoying, like practically every kid that has ever appeared in a film, ever.

Some of the 'catch phrase'-style dialogue in Aliens makes me cringe, but I suppose it was one of the first films to do that. I preferred the much more realistic, improvised dialogue of the first film.

Fine, you don't like kids in films. More your problem really. I thought she was ok and if you don't care for the kid in Aliens, then the film just doesn't work.

They are two very different films with a common subject. Aliens just pips it for me as it has one of the most memorable, quotable screenplays in cinema history. It was also the first 18 film I saw in a cinema and blew me off the seat.

Alien is for me one of the most beautifully crafted, haunting and iconic pieces of cinema ever - both films are probably my two favourite pics of all time.

/wonders if he should unwrap his "all the Aliens films" box set tonight - Bought last year and still not touched.

Is that the 'quadrilogy'? That name pisses me off - shouldn't it be tetralogy?

Thats the devil. I remember when I got it that it was so cheap I could not buy it. Something like £10 for a 9 disc set.

Fucking right! I was desperate for the kid to get eaten.
A merciful quick death over being captured, face huggered and then having a babby alien burst out of her chest? You soft sentimental shite.
