OK, so what is so cool about Firefox?

A popunder is the same as a popup, but it doesn't pop "up" - it appears in the background behind other windows. The idea is that you only notice the ad for whatever it is after you've finished with the site spawning it, so you find it less intrusive and are more likely to click on it. Fat chance.

I was not asking what a popunder or popup is, I was emphasising that you don't see them in Firefox so if you had only ever used Firefox you might never have known about them. 'Twas a kind of joke. Sadly I had many years of IE before converting to Firefox last Christmas so am only too aware of popups and popunders. But those days are gone.

oops

actually I wasn't aware of what popunders were for a while, I've had blockers for so long that I missed them when they started appearing...

I tried Firefox for a week, but prefer Opera as I find it easier to use. This may be just force of habit though as I have used Opera for several years. As a competitor to IE, Firefox is the best going simply because Opera still insists in charging money for it's browser or be inflicted with constant advertising.

To be fair you get security updates for firefox as well. At the moment the only reason we don't get all the crap IE users get is because the browser isn't that popular. So for god sake if anyone asks tell them it's rubbish!!

Yes... But IE has the godawful ActiveX. Allows complete control of your hard disk. No sandboxing like jave so guess how many exploits are written for it. Firefox doesn't come with ActiveX so most of the nasties can't use it.

Me too, but it's not just about laziness. In my experience, the fact that mouse gestures require smaller movements of the mouse than regular browsing means that it's easier on your wrist and forearm during extended periods in front of the computer.

avoiding porn should also help with that

I've downloaded it, been using it for about a week. I think I must be missing something.
the tabbed browsing, the fast rendering.
I don't like the way the "find in this page..." seach appears right at the bottom - that's very irritating.

I just like to be able to open every unread thread on a page with a single mouse gesture. Have my place saved when I close the browser so it opens with all the pages open. Good RSS support in the form of live bookmarks. Tabbed browsing is excellent but you can get that with any browser now, no one wants a dozen IE windows open all the time. Decent pop-up controls and advert controls. All that sort of stuff.

No, you've got me wrong there. I mean I think there must be cool things I haven't noticed yet.

I've been an AutoCAD technician for 7 years, using it every day, all day still find out cool new things :)

Did you know you can hold down shift during TRIM or EXTEND and do the other operation? That's the latest one to rock my world :)

I like what I notice when I'm occasionally forced to go back to IE.

These are:

  • link bar at the top
  • find as you type (incredibly useful - just type in the word and you're taken to it!)
  • tabs and their key shortcuts (much less window/taskbar clutter)
  • the search in the top right corner (I use this for thesaurus most)
  • various extensions such as WML support, EXIF info on pictures, Chatzilla IRC
  • non-intrusive pop up blocker (forgot these existed really)
  • the download manager

what do you mean by the link bar? do you mean the bookmarks toolbar folder? if you do, I agree that it's nice, but IE's had the same thing for yonks.

The main thing I like about Firefox, compared to IE, is that if I write, say a long email, or long post, on IE, sometimes (and this may be related to the fact that connections in China are lousy) when I hit 'post' or 'send', the whole thing will crash out on me and I've lost everything I wrote.

But with Firefox, it just says "Connection timed out", you just click OK and send again. And Robert's your dad's cousin.

Of course, one can get around this on IE by using Wordpad to write the email, but it's far easier with Firefox.

I'm addicted to StumbleUpon too. :D (Xtine66)

I Love Firefox! Pages load much more quickly than in exploder for one thing. So many things about it can be customized to suit you, unlike exploder. I love being able to select themes and extensions for it. I'll never use anything else again.
I'm also a big fan of AdBlock - blocking ads (and Flash! Joy!) makes pages load more quickly and w/o distracting irritations. It even made my yahoo mail far more bearable. I can't live w/o it anymore.

I used Opera for a long time, but it would not let me sign in to my acc'ts at www.myhq.com and the ads are awful and plentiful. It also caught a nasty virus And browser hijacker which could only be fixed by wiping the C drive. I'll never use it again.

Don't get me started on how fucked netscrape is. Damn thing crashed almost as often as exploder. Bastard browser also ate up my bookmarks dunno how many times! It made me run and hide all my bookmarks at myhq.com
