Oi! Skips are not a free community resource!

once lobbed a broken vacuum cleaner in one
there was a steady stream of people putting stuff in it and others taking the same stuff out :D

Our council put out skips every couple of months - best thing they've done by far...
Where's that then? Lewisham Council charge for collecting large items.

Which is ridiculous, all it means is people dump TVs, fridges and the rest on the street (AND IN MY SKIP!) in the dead of the night.

Same 'round here. There's been a wheelie bin outside here full of broken plate glass for ages. It must have about 100kg of glass in it. The bin wagon won't take it and the street clearence guys won't touch it with a barge pole.

((penguin)) by the way. :(

It's in Barnet. They collect loads of stuff.
Thats cool. Best place Ive heard of till now was Bromley, who collect almost everything and give out loads of different coloured recycling bins.

shit i just remememebered my entire office is skip produce apart from a few nails and screws to repair stuff and makes shelves..does this reduce, as they say in Guardianese, my carbon footprint?

Yeah! What of it? :D
Actually over the years I've probably taken more out of skips than I've dumped in 'em. And when I did hire a skip I spent most of the night curtain twitching and it was still half full come morning and I was knackered through lack of sleep.

Its MY skip! I paid for it! I also pay council tax and so have the right to park the skip outside my house!
[/indignant house householder!:D ]

I hope you are joking there - skips on public roads are something that makes me see red. Often they are unlit & without reflectors & motorcyclists have died because of them!

Oh, in most circumstances you don't have the right to park a skip or anything else outside your house - especially for weeks on end.

Some info on the vaugeries of skip-regs & permits here: http://www.topskips.com/skip-permits.php

Last time I had a skip outside my house - in the road for a weekend but fully lit, reflectored & with a permit, I had to sit-up half the nights from Friday-Monday just to deter the dumpers - several whom turned-up with trailers full of rubbish!

Keep your knickers on! My skip is a thing of beauty and has lights all over it.
Any in anycase I live on a private road- Cyclists shouldnt be coming down it anyway. They are lucky we dont charge a toll. ;)

I am kidding

Kind of. If I did live on a private road - I would make people pay :D

No Way! Trailers is taking the piss!! Cheeky!

The stuff in the trailers is going to go somewhere: rather a skip than a pile at the side of the road.

All very tragic but as an ex biker if you can't see something the size of a skip you probably shouldn't be driving. :(

Why can't skips come with padlockable lids so you can undo it when you want to use it?

Our council collects bulk items free of charge up to 15 times a year so not needed one

Bloody hell! Only OAP's get a free bulk collection here & that is limited to just twice a year. Everyone else has to pay.

Yup, I'm on a road out of town & you would see them slowing down & checking it out, later returning with the stuff to dump. Vultures.

If they could trailer it to my skip, they could easilly take it 5 minutes further-on to a public tip/recycling centre & dispose of it there.

Also skips are not cheap, why should we be expected to pay for some total stranger's rubbish, dumped without even asking permission?

Dunno, even as a fairly sensible & observant rider, I've had a few close shaves with a variety of large & unlit objects sitting in the strangest places over the years.

It need not be the skip itself either. I've also seen one placed where it totally obscured any sight to one side of a Zebra Crossing & you simply could not see the person about to step in the road. Nor could they see you. :(
