Oh help, oh no; it's a Gruffalo!

this is the current favourite with fen_child number 1

I used to love reading to the kids but the eldest is now obsessed with Francesca Simon's plodding Horrid Henry series. Each story is twenty minutes' worth of bedtime tedium. And the little fiend can read well enough now to catch me out when I skip bits.

though The Gruffalo's Child was a big disappointment - it's the same book backwards but not as good, you lazy twats ).

I thought the Gruffalo's Child was very cleverly done, as it goes!

Hairy McClary fron Donaldson's Dairy

That's a cracker, as is the same author's first Slinky Malinki book. The subsequent books in both series are disappointing, though -- too samey, with some really lazy illustration (imo).

I read this a lot to Renegadepup.

Actually I should note some of the other recommendations on this thread and email them to santa aka renegadegrandma to post to me in china....

the gruffalos child is in my opinion even better than the gruffalo.
i took shiftyjunior to go see the gruffalo when they were touring the stage production and it was FANTASTIC!!! i bought the dvd of it and we laugh along and sing the songs and stuff but shiftyjunior os a bit scared of the grufalo :D
you can get copies of it off ebay, ive given one to almost every child i know because its tops

18months might be a bit young, but the cat in the hat is a classic

I love the poo mole and one about a wombat in someone's garden.

The gruffalo book is apparently dedicated to my old primary school, but I have no idea why.

My three-and-three-quarters old niece is mad for 'One Red Dot' and 'Blue Two' pop up books, the first of which she's loved since she was about two. They both feature the most amazing abstract pop-ups with a red dot or a blue two hidden within them, which are fun to look for. Cool for adults, too!

Quite good as well, I think, for teaching little ones to look after things carefully, as they have to be careful with the delicate pop-ups, as my niece has been.
