oh hell, the i.t service desk at work have automatically quarntined some of my emails

Not only staying on the server, but getting backed up too.
^^
Data is always retrievable.

What you type on this site, without anyone having to log on and read it, is readable if someone wanted to, all it is is packets of data. The only way to properly destroy data is to smash to smitherines the media it's stored on.

Deleted data, with the space written over, deleted, repeat over... is still retrievable.

Had a chat with an IT blokey at work recently. He said a few years ago there was a whole load of raunchy emails caught by MIMEsweeper between 2 people in the organisation who were having an affair :D

Happens all the time :D

I've yet to see this reliably proven. What you're suggesting is that data storage devices have unlimited storage potential....

I actually bet that it's easier to find something worthwhile on the shards of a so-called smashed hard drive platter than it is to find something on a randomly re-written platter covered with the recommended 32 layers.

Not to distract from the OP but the time (of horror) may now have passed since my own incident and if worded correctly it would offer a thrilling corporate take on the daily desk insanity.

Mad times..................

About a dozen people directly affected, hundreds of others affected and an IT department going through bedlam. Ended being a global headache for the corporation and I have drawn upon the experience many times I assure you.

There is a book in this (there are many in me) so perhaps I should keep my powder dry?

I was the first domino once :D

This is a bit scary. Whenever I have worked in offices I have sent loads and loads of personal emails. In one job it was nearly all I did.

I sent about 50 in one day once.:o

We had good codes like 'beach' for 'bitch' and 'creamy' for 'sexy'. God that's a bit of a gross one actually.

Anyway I never got found out. I just doubt they cared much, I was at the bottom of the job ladder.

If it's good enough for the DoD it's good enough for me.

(But maybe that's just what they want us to think... :hmm: )

It's best to assume in general though that any email you send will be used against you by your company if they ever want to, forever, no matter what you do about it apart perhaps from blow up the server room and any offsite backups they have. Just like it's best to assume that anything you post on the net will be found out by your company who you've been slagging off or husband whose beard you hate or sister whose pants you've been sniffing.

Im feeling better now. I wont feel completly 100% until close of play tomorrow though. What a plonker I sometimes am.

Really, don't worry, please. Don't forget that some of these posts are for the benefit of other people - not specifically directed at your particular situation if you see what I mean (e.g. the one I'm about to post below). Don't lose any sleep over it. They released your emails, it's unlikely that they're on your case.

Forensic data retrieval is costly and isn't always reliable/complete, but it can be done - I've seen what can be accessed. I don't think people should be blasé about these things ... keep work separate from personal. It's not worth the risk.

You need to be careful about the contents of work e mails but not paranoid.
Quarantine is usually triggered by a combination of words, can use metaphors but not SO obvious that they can really use it against you. Most important is to only share your work e mail with people you can trust not to send shite.

We don't need any forensic data recovery. EVERYTHING is kept indefinitely now. Every Email sent or received, every file, every revision of files, (we do snapshot backups of the whole network every 30 mins).... :D

Yeah :D The example I saw was from a very small company with limited backups/skillz and they still managed to retrieve a shit load of stuff. And that was about 3 years ago, times & affordable technology march on.

Right now I can do what I want online but have to be aware that every word I type may end read out in a court somewhere!

There are a few of us that all have full access to each others email accounts. If I get knocked over by a bus tomorrow then the fellow sitting next to me will already know what I have said so there are no mistakes.

Cheers:)

If I come out of this unscathed I doubt I'll even post on Urban again from work! I definetly wont be accusing any of the top brass of wanting to wank me off either.:o

I think I'll be ok. Like I said, the Quarantine function seems automatic. It automatically stopped the e-mail, automatically checked it due to thinking it was spam, then automatically released it when it determined it wasn't. I just hope it doesn't automatically stop the e-mail, but then that e-mail is manually checked to determine suitability.

Yes, the odd one, think there was a fuck, a wank, but that was about it. I think the main issue was that the system thought it was spam due to the picture included in the body of the message. There was however sackable content in the e-mail, which is why I was abit concerned.

There is zero reason for there ever to be swear words in corporate emails unless you are giving someone directions to Scunthorpe so your spam idea is wishful thinking.

You have been flagged.

My reasoning behind it was the swearing was said at the beginning of the conversation without being quarantined, however when the two e-mails with the picture came through, it was then i received the warning.

Exactly. It was just an automated spam trap. There are not people sat there looking for naughty emails. The IT team really couldn't give a fuck (unless you're working for a very strict regime with a little Hitler for an IT manager, or, you're being monitored for other reasons).

Pornographic images or movies, yeah, you might get in trouble. Swear words in an email - highly unlikely.

Except for the fact that everyone swears in emails...

Seriously, who the fuck are some of you working for?! :D

"Fire employee 23423 - they said shit in an email!"

I take it all is still quiet Onslow?

Yes I still have a job at the moment:cool:

But lesson learnt for the future. No gratutitous comments to be made about board members and no gory details about weekend activities will ever be made again through my work e-mail:o

IT are only strict on things like personal identifible information etc, and have an information governance department built within it, so I think you're right, my e-mail won't have garnered the attention I initially thought it might of done! It was the first time i'd been in reciept of a quarantine warning, so I didnt really know what was going on!

No, not really. I keep my .gov.uk email for WORK and then spend the rest of my time swearing on here and in gmail.

I have a few mates who work for various councils and they swear like sailors in their emails.

Obviously there will be some workplaces where things like this are still considered important, but fuck knows I'm glad I don't work there.

Most places won't object to swearing in emails as a policy.
