Spielberg is not a brilliant director- he just has many millions of dollars behind him, with which he should be able to do a fuck of a lot better than he does. I don't really think anything I've seen of his is genius, and most of it is tosh.
Empire of the Sun is good (well I thought it was when I saw it when I was 12, lol), but he's responsible for a fair amount of crap- War of the Worlds, Indiana Jones & the Crystal Nonsense, Jurassic Park II, Hook... and the rest is mostly mediocre "blockbuster" tripe.

and reframing it as I hate all big-budget movies.
Sure I expressed myself carelessly, but I think my later post clarified things, as you seem to have discovered for yourself.
Picking apart a single sentence without its extremely-close context is itself a little fatuous.

I have considered the "better" ones. I don't really like them. I was merely presenting a list of those that would jolt people back to the reality of how he's not all that.

Well, I agree that he's uneven, but Duel, The Sugarland Express, etc, are movies that have merit, imo.
 
and I think all the people who are saying Will Smith isn't any good probably haven't heard of the often overlooked 'Wild Wild West'. not only did he put in a commanding acting performance, he made the theme song as well
