Offside Rule

Should the officials get help, whatever the rule might be?

More goals => more people watch it on TV => more money.

Me, cynical?

Ah! yes maybe it was that. The same as the idea from the US to increase the goal size - more goals - more money...:hmm:

I wonder if those people here who voted for no change, and who seem reluctant to continue this discussion, would also be in favour of that change remaining if it had been enacted...

In the long term I reckon that we'll have to go back to the old rule, in the same way as real-time aids for the officials would seem logical, seeing as it would ensure that they know exactly what is happening to the ball in the game at any one time.

I don't mean to be harsh but what are you talking about? Anyone who has watched football both with the previous rule and with the modern rule can see that tho the new rule may be more 'fair' on players who can't be arsed to get back onside to enable their team to score... the fact remains that it is simply unreasonable to expect the officials to bear in mind the 3-4 things accurately now as opposed to the previously already difficult call to make with only 2 things in mind...

Perhaps it's an issue with the Premiership, but I've certainly not noticed any increase in "dodgy" offside decisions here in Scotland.

That is what we're discussing isn't it?

Sure, I would love to see the stats if there were any, but it is the complication which is the issue for me.

The officials now have to consider so much more than with the previous rule, and they made mistakes with the previous rule, so it would seem unfair to make it harder.

I think the original law was introduced to break down the example typified by the Arsenal defence, which was well organised and so was able to catch many less aware players offside by stepping up.

Not the biggest of problems maybe, all part of the game some might say. But now it has been made so complicated, with disputed active play decisions that the effect has been to make it harder to defend, thus more goals, and even more difficult to officiate.
