October Craft Club?

i have baked about 5 cakes in my life so far...meh!

(poor apology to have to bring houmus yet again..)

(just for the record our bakers are ruby, eme, innit and biddlybee) did i forget someone?

pps i keep saying we should have a baking craft club so i can learn one more cake to do.

ahh, cool I was wondering what the etiquette was regarding cake :D

I'm not sure I dare present any of my baking "attempts" next to the experts though!

*packs hummous*

I never get time to bake for craft club these days sadly.

I texted innit and she's going to bring the spare pot of craft club jam we kept back. I'll make sure we've got enough flour and things to make scones as well as crumpets (although it might be too confusing/time-consuming to do both, we'll have to see how it goes).

cool, i didn't realise we were making crumpets! brilliant

btw: i saw eme today and she can only be there from 1800 so the Q is, should we perhaps only start at 1600 and go into the early eve instead..?

also Lidl has silicon baking trays for cheap this week. just thought i'd let you all know.

4pm suits me as it gives me the daytime free.

PS for the benefit of new people - we normally bring a few nice things to eat and drink. It's traditional for everyone to bring hummous, and then moan about there being no cake.

extra garlickey hummous.

:D

Is it too late for me to sign up?

I have a bolero jackety thing which looks exceedingly WRONG :( and might need help or at least reassurance that it isnt wrong.

NO!!! Not too late :) I was about to PM you to try and make you come :p Do you need directions/address again or do you still have them?

I think I know where you live, I can head in the right direction then call if I get lost :D

might need a door number though :o

Boo. Can't make this now. Have come down with a nasty cold over night and have to stay curled up under the duvet.

Soo disappointed. :(

Have fun, all, and eat some cake for me.

Thanks all for a lovely afternoon, and thanks Ruby for hosting

Tea, hot crumpets and good company :)

And most of all...I HAVE KNITTED HALF A SCARF! WHOO! :D :D

(your finished scarf will look wicked i reckon..yay)

Lovely to see everyone. I was very popular at work this morning when I unloaded all the cake... and I've got samosas and pate to look forward to for lunch :D

Here's the crumpet recipe by popular demand. Well, two people asked for it...

8 oz bread flour (I used white on Sunday but normally I use half white, half wholemeal)
1 sachet easy blend yeast (this is the type of yeast that, if you're making bread, only needs one rising rather than two - check the packet)
Large pinch of salt
1 tsp black treacle
Warm water

Beat all these together thoroughly, using enough water to give a gloopy consistency (sort of porridge thickness). Cover the bowl and leave in a warm place for about an hour, until bubbly and well risen.
Cook ladlefuls on a greased frying pan. Turn over when dry on top (if you turn them over too soon, you collapse the holes).
You're meant to use crumpet rings, but I find they always stick to them, and because they're thicker they don't cook that well in the middle. There's probably a secret but I don't know what it is. Maybe less liquid?
