get your bodies and banners down there.

(can you confirm that GL?)

The parents chained to the outside and some inside of victoria primary, govanhill, are going to end their action at around 8pm this evening.

It is only ending to avoid disruption of the childrens education by having them taken by bus away from the school tommorow. Complete bully tactics by the council, shameful stuff. Their protest outside would not have caused any disruption to the education of the kids. More like the council dont want this sort of action "seen" in the community....

the local councillor, anne-marie millar, funnily enough lives only yards from the protest and the school in question. No surprise that she has not shown her face.. some parents showed their displeasure there on friday night prior to taking this action today.

protest at the councillors? ;)

Supporters of the Belfast occupiers are calling for an International Day of Action, nothing confirmed as of yet, but it looks like it will be on Friday the 9th of May.

Things worth bearing in mind:
  • Ford plants and plants that supply parts to Visteon or Ford are obviously the main focus for leafletting.
  • KPMG, the administration firm responsible for the eviction notice against the Belfast occupiers have offices across the UK. If there's no plants in your area connected to the dispute, an information picket at a KPMG office might be worthwhile.
  • If you can't manage an information picket, a fundraising event of some kind could be helpful (cheques and postal orders made out to "HSG" to PO Box 2474, London, N8).

Today

Glasgow councillors will decide whether to press ahead with proposals to close or merge 13 primary schools and 12 nurseries across the city later.

Extra security measures will be laid on ahead of the council vote on the plans, which have met fierce opposition.

Call to blockade the council meeting today (now in fact)

The save our schools demo will be on going, nipped down for a couple of hours before i had to go to work at 1pm. I left just after 12pm with around 100 parents and supporters gathered outside the City Chambers building.

Some of the parents had been camped there since the day before.

Spirits were high, I do hope that more people joined the demo after I left. Tho it is a shool/working day which would have made the numbers less. None the less, hats off to the parents from all the schools who have been participating in the action. Certainly made their mark and been noticed in the media.. total respect, fine example of community action.

Parents Occupy School Roof in protest at closure!
The spirit of the Glasgow school occupation and the Visteon workers has spread and parents in a primary school in Lewisham have occupied the school roof in protest at the closure.

The details are on this facebook group:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=94554226367

and the background is on this blog:

Messages of support can be put on the facebook group and sent to [email protected]

Also the people at the school would really appreciate any visits to the school or anyone who can do shifts on the roof. The BBC, Evening Standard and others have already been down there and the Visteon workers are hopefully sending a delegation to a public meeting outside the school tomorrow at 3.30pm.

The occupation of the Prisme factory in Dundee (which I'd stupidly missed off when I started this thread) has succeeded in securing funding to start a co-op
Dundee Prisme support group on facebook said:
After 51 days the Dundee Prisme workers have decided to end their occupation. The reason we have taken this decision is that it looks like we have secured funding to take our co-op venture forward and save the jobs that we thought had gone.

Our occupation began to secure our redundancy payments and other monies that were denied to us by our employer when we were sacked. However, during the occupation we also decided to fight to safeguard our jobs because we believed there was a viable business, even if our predecessors did not.. It looks like we have achieved this aim. A new company Discovery Packaging and Design Ltd is going to be launched on 1st May 2009.

This victory would not have been possible if it had not been for the support we have had from the general public, trade unionists, socialists and many others. This support and solidarity has been overwhelming and has helped give us the energy and determination to carry on for more than 7 weeks.

We said at the beginning of this that we were little people who had refused to be little anymore. We are proud of what we have achieved and our dignity is intact. We showed we would not be walked over by an uncaring employer.

We want to thank all those who have supported our struggle over the last 51 days, your support has been invaluable. Thanks once again to you all.

The Prisme workers will be leaving the factory together and united at 5pm on Friday 24th April. Come along and wish them well - bring your banners!

Rob Williams, the Unite convenor of the Linamar car parts factory in Swansea and vice chair of the NSSN, was called into the directors' office of the plant on Tuesday 28 April and told that he was being sacked for "irretrievable breakdown of trust". This blatant victimisation of one of the leading left-wing shop steward activists in the car industry was met by an immediate production line walk-off by the day shift. They surrounded Rob's union office after management called in police to forcibly remove Rob from the building.

Rob has been very active in the campaign of the sacked Visteon car parts workers and has recently visited all three of their plants. His sacking is likely to be linked to his role in this struggle. The Visteon Unite convenors are demanding that Rob be reinstated and they, alongside many others, are calling on Unite joint general secretary Tony Woodley to also back the immediate reinstatement of Rob.

Phone protests to:
* Head of Swansea Linamar Brian Wade 01792 656339
* Personnel Manager 01792 656 238
