Obscure old indie bands

most of these aren't obscure at all

<needs to get out more>

I used to love The Venus Beads....sort of British Huskers inspired stuff

(my economics teacher gave Fudge Tunnel their first gigs afaik and they certainly weren't death metal)

anyone for Bastard Kestrel, Death by Milkfloat, Dub Sex, Speed Chicken, Hog Butcher??

Pah, these aren't obscure...must try harder. :D

I know they did more but The Fire Engines and Candy Skin has got to be a standard of indieness.

That doesn't seem very obscure to me, but that's 'cos it's one of my favourite singles of all time. Bought it when it first came out and it (-well, the b-side Meat Whiplash) blew my young mind.

My point is that I find it hard to be objective and realise how obscure/non-obscure some things are. :o

The two albums on Virgin were simply repackaged versions of earlier albums on DinDisc.

Apart from a one album stint with WEA in 85 (where they registered their one chart hit, Jacob's Ladder), the rest of their output was on indie labels (Cherry Red, Rough Trade etc).

They're a great band - and I was well honoured to play on their excellent 'Dante's Casino' album in 1990!

I feel a Monochrome Set appreciation thread coming on...

wot do you remember of Speed Chicken or Hog Butcher then? I remember the names but not really anything about them...

naff off :p

I liked 'em

I thought they were pretty good at the time too, actually. :)

-Any idea whereabouts they were from? I've got vague memories of one of them having some sort of local connection to where I was living then, but I might be getting completely mixed up...

:) Anyone else remember The Family Cat? :)
not that obscure either! & they should have sued Fencvh Connection for nicking their FCUK tag!

I had a dub sex album too, I ws considering entering it in the 'worst album you ever bought' thread.

& now, I cant remember the name of my mates band from Leeds that I was going to mention....it was quite similar to a far more sucesful band of the time, who people always think I'm referring to if I ever mention them...aaah well, maybe it will come back to me.

To deeply mixed emotions, the album I played on was in the Daily Mail's music editor's Top Ten for the year!

They were a great band though.

anyone remember trousershock BC? (the BC stood for belinda carlisle) they had a song called "miles hunt stole my girl away from me"

Monochrome set may have been first indie band i ever bought a record by - back ine alry 80s when they were on cherry red. never thought thay were that obscure though.

i saw all of them - that's probably why i can remember them so easily

anyone remember colorblind james experience - excellent eccentric american band from early 90s

they were more than just one song though - only two bands made me laugh so much at a gig - HMHB and Colorblind Jim

"It's OK to disturb me, that's what i came here for" :D
