I'm afraid New Labour are already bigging up Lammy for 2012.

Well of course, but it is equally important not to let your knowledge of HIS history colour you judgement of what he said...
This is a fair comment to make. Regardless of what you think of Philips, he is bang on in saying that. The 'old boy' network is very much still at play.

They may well be - and this may well be Phillip's early response.

TBF the "something of the night" about him wasn't the media or the public, that was his own party, or rather mad Catholic Ann Widdecombe.
It sure is, and it's pish to beleive that Phillips himself hasn't been a benifiicary of forms of it it in his long career in various institutions. Criticisms like that carry far far more weight from someone whose really been locked totally out. This rings hollow and stinks of political expediency.
As I said upthread, Trevor being Mandelsons' bezzer mate then moaning about Old Boys Networks takes some chutzpah.
Viz also the bigging up of Trev for the past five years in the Observer, followed by Kamal Ahmed, resigning in disgrace after the Nick Davies book, taking a 100k plus job as, er, Trev's publicist.
My point wasnt a party political one, just that once Widdecombe said it, it stuck. Big hooked nose, vampire teeth, blood dripping.
Perhaps it was unconscious imagery. *shrugs*
Absolutely. You, VP and IJ have made all the points that i wanted to.

Keith Vaz fucked himself up the arse meaning?????????????
His deep corruption, ahem, I mean "cronyism."

Given that change is often a slow, protracted process, and genuine revolutions are exceedingly rare, would it not be pragmatic to assume that someone who doesn't fit the conventional profile of a politician (such as a non-white, non-public school educated person) might have no choice but to indoctrinate themselves, to a certain extent, in the old school, old boy network world, in order to actually get anywhere? Certainly it smacks of sleeping with the enemy, but if the ends justify the means? Not that I'm saying that directly applies to Trevor Philips, but as a general principle it might be the only way to get more diversity into the upper echelons of government...?It sure is, and it's pish to beleive that Phillips himself hasn't been a benifiicary of forms of it it in his long career in various institutions. Criticisms like that carry far far more weight from someone whose really been locked totally out. This rings hollow and stinks of political expediency.

PS - who the fuck is Chuka Ummuna, when he or she is at home?
was watching Question Time this past week when this subject came up. Bonnie Greer was speaking about there a black British PM in time, the camera pulled back and you could see a ripple of something (collective shudder/ revulsion?) as the majority of the audience bristled at the very idea.
There's talk of a plan to seduce what's now being called the 'Love Actually' middle classes back on the back of Obama (allowing Labour to talk in more traditional terms foreign policy wise), perhaps this is part of that?

Ok I get it Keith Vaz can be accused on cronyism, but Peter or Lord Mandelson can get a job in the Lords.
Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Streatham, tipped as a future cabinet minister.
Although, on his form up until now, I'm not sure why, unless being a lawyer is some kind of entree to ministerial rank.
well, Mandelson is now back after all![]()

I considered this too...you know I can see an almost conspiraloonary angle here.

We know TP is a Blairite/Neo Labour man, we know he's skilled at making headlines. The one thing this has done is get lots of BME Labour types on TV basically saying this is wrong and Labour have had better BME representation than the other parties etc. Perhaps this is just some dog whistle tactic to add to the pro Labour/pro mainstream 'left' angling this week (Obama victory, Glenrothes etc) to put the Tories on the spot and make them look utterly out touch socially as well economically?
I mean this story has run high up the running order on both the BBC and Sky all day and it's TP and Labour putting up a fairly convincing defence but from the Tories...silence. No one defending them or saying what they're doing (I think they have more BME candidates than Labour for Parliamentary seats).

Not mad at all. That's exactly what I meant when I said 'we've cracked it' - it's Trev trying to head Lammy off at the pass for 2012 Labour nomination, on the gathering storm of 'there's not enough black representation'.
What a choice, Trevor Phillips or David Lammy...
Trevor Phillips has proved himself to be a twat time and time again.

They may well be - and this may well be Phillip's early response.
