Obama v McCain: gettin' dirty town hall style

For someone with the reputation of being so well spoken, there were a lot of "ehs" and "uhms" from Obama.
It seems to be a left-wing intelligentia* thing; Biden had the same problem and I think Gordon Brown does too. They just overthink what they're saying/doing a little too much and so stutter over what they're saying, rather than ignoring the minor slip-ups in favour of the bigger point.

*did I just make this word up :hmm:

So McCain thinks the Afghanistan war that fought in the 80's was -against- the Mujahedeen even though his-like armed them to the hilt?

Ugh. One of these reptilians is going to be the 'most powerful person in the world' whether we like it or not.

A terribly dull debate in which McCain lost, largely because he missed more than a few obvious attacks on Obama (that we could have prevented the Holocaust thing, Obama repeating word for word his Pakistan position) and he made that very dodgy introduction of a new home rescue package without (correct me if I am wrong here) any prior announcement.

Not that Obama was any better, mind - if there was still anyone who genuinely hoped for change from him I would have thought his comments during that debate would have finally pointed out the obvious, and some of his antics regarding the rules of the debate were pretty rubbish as well.

For once on these US threads I will agree with Jessiedog - barring a radical change of events Obama will win now. Hopefully the return of PMQs and the titanic battle between Brown and Cameron will prove more entertaining.

.

Did he say that? He did say the US drove the Russians out with 'Afghan freedom fighters' and then made mistakes and so 'the taliban came back in.' Ahistorical nonsense.

And he looked like an Ewok who'd drunk too much coffee.

Indeed. I think it makes him look more clueless than he probably is - particularly when most times he needed a few seconds to start rolling, instead of coming up immediately with a brilliant sound bite.

How I regret staying up to watch it, and to think I thought 2004's ones were boring because Kerry was such a plank. They were only interesting at all because of Bush having even less of his brain working in the first one & people wondering if his back bulge meant he was wired. And there has been no such excitement in 2008 so far.

At least energy seems to have replaced immigration as a talking point this election.

I noted at one point Obama was getting into Kennedy mode, and there was talk of missions as ambitious as the moonwalk, but despite many strong words on energy they somehow failed to build a true vision that showed either candidate really believes a 'manhattan style project' to utterly transform the energy landscape is needed. I guess thats for the future once people have actually had some years of the energy & economic problems bringing dramatic pain to their lives. Maybe 4 years, maybe 8?

I cant help thinking McCain & Palin look like the sort of candidates that are picked when the party doesnt really expect to win. If Obama was white, female & not Hilary Clinton, and not quite so aloof, then Id think his victory was a foregone conclusion.

Regardless of who actually wins, I still think the USA needs Obama to restore some of the US's credibility, and to be able to feel good about their country again, something that appears especially relevant to the american psyche. Beyond that I dont know as there is going to be much difference between them in what they actually end up doing if voted into power.

Short of something unforseen

The Bradley effect?

Yer.

That will always be his biggest impediment.

Was reading an article the other day that postulated that when pollsters ask people if they would have a problem with a black president, the general answer is "no", but that when the chips are down, they still won't actually vote for one.
