Americans usually respond in the exact opposite way when foreigners do things like this. Look at the time that the British tried to get involved in the presidential election by mouthing off in Ohio or somewhere against Bush. It had been a close race, but voters ended up going republican there.

There's a book written by Mungo MacCallum, Run, Johnny, Run (about the 2004 election), that alleges Howard 'pimped' for other pollies in his younger years in Canberra (amongst other sordid, yet delicious , claims).

But Howard being the 'teflon' politician that he is, passed through that time with barely a raised bushy eyebrow.

What will actually happen over the next year is that his popularity will grow - and then the people that you support will find some way of mounting a sleazy smear campaign against him, then... well... it all depends on the gulliability of The American People.
