Talking of carrots though, i dug out some soil for someone yesterday and dumped it on my allotment and its lovely weed free sandy soil, perfect for carrots.

pre-germinate seed on wet cotton cloth, mix into wallpaper paste, "ice" into drills using polythene bag with corner cut off.

Some people chit their parsnip seed in damp sand.
Should work with other troublesome umbellifers too.

only until you see the teeniest bit of shoot - otherwise they get a bit fragile.

No.

The gel has to allow the roots to escape and not go mouldy.
"Battering" your seeds would also turn them into tasty snacks for mice and insects.
