Novara based meeting

On the topic of collective joy in politics, the best night out I've had in ages was an italo disco night a few weeks ago organised by Manchester momentum, who IMO have a really good balance in their activities - they run decent political education events mixing high concept theory and practical political activities, are involved with a load of on the ground community organising (red gyms, 5 a side football leagues etc), are a visible and noisy presence at demos and run ace dance nights where everyone goes wild. The wild dance nights are absolutely a key part in holding all of the other stuff together, as well as being a good thing in themselves.

The praxis seems v strong with McR Mom - + Beth R is tops

Who does it attract?
I wasnt taking a register, but the event of theirs I went to in the autumn (which was held in a community centre in moss side) seemed much more mixed than other things of the type I've been to - still a lot of student left/ trade union types, but not totally dominated by them.

Some more Assad apologism (and then swift back tracking) from another Novara personality...

I note GB accused those who pulled her up of 'chauvinism'.

After hailing the book as the 'best I've read all year' she subsequently claimed/revealed that she hadn't actually got to the parts of the Blumenthal book in question.

This is last night and taken at Bastani's book tour or whatever it is. We know who these are....

I think it's a bit of a stretch calling it Assad apologism. Sure we've all shared articles & books by writers who've turned out to be a bit unsavoury - I know I have.

Yeah, I might be being slightly uncharitable, but she did say it was the best book she'd read all year. Maybe it's more apologism for Assad apologism...

So she either lied about having read it all, or approved of it and then back tracked when called up on it for appearances sake. Also I don't think it's esoteric knowledge that Blumenthal is politically suspect when it comes to Syria. And some other folks from Novara have shit track records when it comes to this kinda stuff, so I might be being swayed by that in the less charitable direction tbh.

Good to see you win yourself round! :D

In which case calling out Assad apologism is crucial. This shite is happening now, the left is excusing or even outright denying it NOW.

"the left " aren't " excusing or even outright denying (Assadism ) NOW " - or any other time -some on the left have drifted from principled anti western interventionism into the orbit of tacit apologists - v different thing.

Is it that different? I've encountered people in the Corbynism sphere, almost always self described ML, who are absolutely outright apologists for, and supporters of, Assad. And other stuff, DPRK, Iran, Putin blah

I think had she doubled down on the original post instead of deleting it, it would be fair to call it apologism. As it is, she's just fucked up and recommended a book without properly reading it, and deleted when alerted to it's problems. Careless certainly, but it's not apologism.

oddball outliers on the fringes of the left are nothing new, but as with everything, social media gives them platforms and means of amplification that they never had before .

" outright apologists for, and supporters of, Assad. And other stuff, DPRK, Iran, Putin blah " are about as relevant to any meaningful notion of ' the Left ' as National Socialist parties are to the right

That’s my take as well. Plus rather than admit she’d recommended something she hadn’t bothered to read as the ‘best book of the year’ she sought refuge in ‘chauvinism’ bollocks when pulled on it.

Not sure about blakely & bloodworths history, he may well be a chauvinist for all I know. He's certainly a prick.

No doubt, but GB was still flailing when she accused him of chauvinism for pointing out the pro-Assad politics of the author of her favourite book!

The latest Acid Corbynism FM on the weird left and normie socialism is excellent:

Includes a concession that the capacity for the Labour Party to be weird is extremely limited.

As well as nods to anarchopunk, Beefheart, Psychic Tv, class war, and more.

what shite, there’s a fuckton of it. Even in Orkney, the guy that led the last “don’t bomb Syria” protest said “Assad is the best person to tackle ISIS in Syria” and claimed he was supported by most Syrians. I used to get endless trolling on Facebook pointing me to “alternative views” on the numerous chemical attacks in Syria before I wiped my account entirely for a year or so- false flag etc. This is in the far, far north ffs.

Best book she’s read all year no less, massive fuck up for someone who reads and writes for a living.
